Carbon for Android Backs Up Your Phone, No Root Required

Carbon for Android Backs Up Your Phone, No Root RequiredCarbon for Android Backs Up Your Phone, No Root Required Android (4.0+): When we last discussed Carbon, it was still in beta and required root. Now, the app has emerged from beta with a ton of new features, is available at Google Play, and doesn't require root to do any of the awesome things it can do.

Carbon is the work of Koushik "Koush" Dutta, the same developer behind ClockworkMod, one of our favorite Android utilities. This newest project is a sharp-looking backup and syncing tool for your Android device, one that can take your apps, app data (saved games, preferences, and so on), contacts, and other important data and save it to your phone's SD card or your desktop.

The app comes in two flavors: the free version backs up all of your data and stores it on your SD card or your desktop. For a $5 USD in-app upgrade, the premium version ditches the ads and unlocks a ton of additional features, including the ability to perform automatic hands-free backups on a schedule you set, and the ability to save your data to Dropbox, Google Drive, or Box.net in addition to your SD card or desktop. The premium version also allows you to sync two Android devices, so moving to a new phone is a snap.

The only caveat is that Carbon doesn't work on Motorola devices. Koush explains that Motorola phones "have a bug that break Android's backup mechanism," one that Motorola/Google will have to fix. He does note that if you have a Motorola phone and Carbon does work for you, he wants to hear from you. You can grab the app at the Google Play link below.

Harbaugh brothers could envision working together

NEW ORLEANS (AP) ? Working separately, John and Jim Harbaugh each guided their team to the Super Bowl. They will be on opposite sidelines Sunday, John as head coach of the Baltimore Ravens and Jim with the San Francisco 49ers.

Imagine how effective they could be if working together.

At their joint news conference Friday, someone asked the brothers if they would consider teaming up if either should be forced out of his current post.

"No question about it," John said. "We've had that conversation in the past. It just never really worked out timing-wise. I'd love to work for Jim. It would be the greatest thing in the world."

Jim, coach of the San Francisco 49ers, said, "Definitely, I would work for him."

Super Bowl tradition dictates that the coaches meet with the media separately two days before the Super Bowl. That custom was altered Friday because, after all, two brothers have never before coached against each other in the Super Bowl.

Wearing a dark suit, white shirt, striped tie and laced business shoes, John settled into a director's chair behind a Ravens helmet. Jim, wearing a 49ers hat, a sweat shirt, khaki pants and running shoes, sat in an identical chair behind a San Francisco helmet.

Calling it "an exciting moment," John ticked off the names of family members in attendance, including his parents. They posed for pictures with grandfather Joe Cipiti on the stage afterward, too.

Jack Harbaugh, their father, was a successful college coach. His sons followed in his footsteps, but on different paths. There was one time, however, when the routes nearly merged.

"We almost made it happen at Stanford at one time," John said. "It would be an honor to have him on the staff. He's a great coach. You always try to get great coaches, and there are none better than Jim Harbaugh, and I mean that seriously. There's no better coach in the National Football League than this guy right here."

To which Jim added, "Well, Jack Harbaugh."

The family coaching tree could run even deeper one day. Jim's son, Jay, works for John as a coaching intern with the Ravens.

"He's far better than we've anticipated, and I knew he would be great at what he does," John said.

The brothers obviously had a lot of fun with the situation, joking with each other and sometimes acting like a comedy team.

Someone asked them to list their commonalities and philosophical differences.

"I would be hard-pressed to spell philosophical right now," Jim said.

"I know he can't spell commonalities," John said, not missing a beat.

Although Jack Harbaugh has received much of the credit for molding the boys into coaches, the brothers revealed that their mother, Jackie, also had a great deal of influence on their growth into men.

"There is no one in the family who has more competitive fire than my mother. She competes like a maniac. She has just always believed in us, and I think that is the most important thing to me. She believed in me, John, and Joanie, and took us to games and played catch with us, shot baskets with us, and just believed in us."

"No one would fight harder for us than our mom, no matter what the situation was, or teach us how to have each other's back and be there for one another," John said. "We may have been talking football with dad in the basement, but mom was talking about other things. There were a lot of things going on in our world during the '70s, and Mom was always tuned in on those kinds of things."

Someone asked the brothers whether they considered how they will handle the postgame handshake. Jim Harbaugh enraged Detroit Lions coach Jim Schwartz for giving him a quick handshake and a hard backslap after a 2011 game, but that certainly won't be an issue Sunday night.

"I've given absolutely no consideration to the postgame hand shake or bear hug or anything else," John said. "I haven't thought about that for one second. Have you, Jim?"

"I have not," Jim confirmed.

Asia stocks fall after US shows 4Q contraction

BANGKOK (AP) ? An unexpected contraction in the U.S. economy at the end of 2012 sent Asian stock markets into retreat Thursday.

The U.S. economy shrank in the fourth quarter for the first time since mid-2009, hurt by big cuts in defense spending, falling exports and sluggish growth in company stockpiles, the government reported Wednesday. That put the brakes on a Wall Street rally that had pushed the Dow to near-record highs.

"The market has been looking for any excuse to pull back after such an epic month and has taken this news as the main lead for the day," said Evan Lucas of IG Markets in Melbourne in an email commentary.

The Nikkei 225 in Tokyo fell 0.5 percent to 11,063.90 after the government reported lower-than-expected growth in December's industrial production. Output climbed a seasonally adjusted 2.5 percent from November but most analysts had forecast an improvement of more than 4 percent.

Hong Kong's Hang Seng fell 0.5 percent to 23,716.47. South Korea's Kospi shed 0.3 percent to 1,958.66. Australia's S&P/ASX 200 fell 0.5 percent to 4,873. Benchmarks in Taiwan and Malaysia fell. Mainland China was mixed. The Philippines rose.

In a statement released after a two-day policy meeting, the U.S. Federal Reserve acknowledged that the economy is still struggling to regain momentum. The central bank said that growth had "paused in recent months," and while it was taking no new action, it would keep buying $85 billion of bonds a month.

With the Fed meeting behind them, traders and investors will now turn their focus back to company earnings and Friday's nonfarm employment report.

The Dow closed down 0.3 percent at 13,910.42 on Wednesday after the government reported that the economy shrank an annualized 0.1 percent in the October-December quarter of 2012. It grew 3.1 percent the July-September quarter. The Standard & Poor's 500 fell 0.4 percent to 1,501.96. The Nasdaq composite index fell 0.4 percent to 3,142.31

Benchmark oil for March delivery was up 5 cents to $97.99 per barrel in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. The contract rose 37 cents to finish at $97.94 per barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange

In currencies, the euro slipped slightly to $1.3566 from $1.3567 late Wednesday in New York. The dollar fell to 91.05 yen from 91.20 yen.

How To Become a Real Estate Investor, Part II, by Carrie Benuska ...

How To Become a Real Estate Investor, Part II, by?Carrie Benuska,?San Marino Real Estate

The San?Marino Real Estate Report, as seen weekly in the?San Marino Tribune

How to Become a Real Estate Investor, Part II, by Carrie Benuska, San Marino Real Estate

How to Become a Real Estate Investor, Part II, by Carrie Benuska, San Marino Real Estate

In Part II of my series on how to become a real estate investor, I would like to put my focus on a safe route for making money through investment in residential real estate.? Purchasing a property to be held over a period of time enables an investor to rent out the property for monthly income.? Although it can be hard to turn a profit right after the purchase, especially with a greater Pasadena property, over time this type of investment is a way to build net worth and bring in passive income.

Purchasing a rental property with plans to own it over a long period of time, is a great way to enter the real estate investment world.? As long as the individual can keep up with the monthly expenses and retain tenants, this scheme has limited risk.? As well as earning a monthly income, the owner will most likely experience the benefits of appreciation over the period of ownership.? If at some point the individual needs cash for living expenses or faces unforeseen difficulties, they hopefully will net a tidy sum.? Additionally,?based on the owner?s personal tax situation, the depreciation received from the investment could also have certain tax advantages.

As a middle ground between an immediate flip and long-term ownership of a rental property, an investor could choose to purchase a property, with the goal of turning it over after a short period of time.? With the current tax laws, an individual can purchase a property, own it for at least a year, and then 1031 exchange it for a different property of equal or greater value.? A 1031 exchange allows the owner to postpone paying taxes on any gain made through the transaction.

The challenges with owning rental properties is the work required to maintain the property and the continued need to find and retain well-qualified and trust-worthy tenants. Finding good tenants can be difficult, and renters who do not pay in a timely manner or mis-treat the house are problematic.? Also, as a landlord, if something goes wrong with the house, it is the job of the landlord to repair the issue.? If the property is located a considerable distance from the owner, they might choose to hire a management company to handle the day-to-day affairs.? Finding a good company can be tricky, and this adds to the monthly expenses for the investment.

Teles Properties agent and real estate investor, Kathleen Mahoney, bought her rental property over ten years ago for $225,000.? With a keen eye for emerging neighborhoods, Mahoney chose to purchase a triplex in hipster Echo Park.? When deciding on an appropriate purchase, she looked for a great deal in an area with interesting shopping and dining.? She wanted to quickly turn a profit and believed that a convenient location would draw more potential renters.? In the beginning, she lived in the largest unit and rented out the other two.? As an added benefit, at the time of purchase, all of the units were already leased, which brought her immediate income after the close.

Mahoney believes it is important to provide a good living environment for her renters, so she makes an effort to maintain the units well.? She has had great success finding good tenants and spends little time each month managing the property.? Each unit received a major overhaul during a period that it was unoccupied.? Prior to purchasing the property, the systems had been upgraded, which minimizes major repairs.

Mahoney?s triplex is now worth approximately $700,000 and turns a profit of $1,700 per month.? She plans to hold onto it, with the hopes of turning it over to her young daughter one day.? In addition, she plans to purchase more homes as her cash flow allows.? When asked what her advice would be for someone considering making the jump into real estate investment, she said, ?Just do it!?

Keep in mind that a thorough analysis should be performed prior to purchasing a rental property.? A Realtor can help identify areas and properties that will yield the best income, and an accountant can help pencil out the financial details.

Entourage Movie Officially in the Works

Entourage ended its HBO run in 2011 and like Sex and the City, the next logical step is to make the jump to the big screen. It took nearly two years, but the movie is finally going to happen. Deadline reports that Warner Bros has give the movie the green light.

Series creator Doug Ellin will direct from a script he wrote. The cast members from the series are in the process of being gathered for the movie, so expect Adrian Grenier, Kevin Connolly, Kevin Dillon, Jeremy Piven, et al to return to reprise their roles.

According to Ellin, the movie will take place six months after the events in the series' finale.

Mark Wahlberg, one of the show's executive producer, revealed late last year that Ellin had completed the script and hoped to shoot the movie this spring. He may be right about the schedule even though no start date has been announced.

"It's going to get back to the basics, kind of like the beginning of the series. We had very strong female characters, but we want the guys to get back to just being guys. I think they were all weighed down by these strong women towards the end of the series, so we are going to get them going crazy. Everyone wants to see them get nuts again," Wahlberg said.

If the movie is anything like the TV series, expect lots of celebrity cameos and, hopefully, it won't turned into anything like Movie 43.
