Visitors to the Lake District can enjoy both the Cumbrian National Park?s many lakes and scenic regions, as well as its villages and opportunities for hill and fell walking. At the same time, the Lake District contains many excellent museums and art galleries, as well as providing the chance to get away to small villages. Featuring an extensive range of natural wildlife and natural beauty spots, the Lake District is an excellent destination for anyone visiting Britain, and features some of England?s most outstanding locations. Some of the best places to visit in the Lake District include:
1 ? The Wordsworth Museum
Located in the town of Grasmere, the Wordsworth Museum celebrates the life of the poet, who had a long association with the Lake District. Much of Wordsworth?s poetry is about the beauty of the region, while the poet spent a large part of his life within the area. Visitors can explore Wordsworth?s cottage, and appreciate some of the views that inspired his work.
2 ? Windermere Trips
Old fashioned steamers can be taken across Lake Windermere, and are recommended for anyone wanting to see the lakes up close, while retaining comfort. Similarly recommended are the Ullswater Steamers, which recreate the Victorian and Edwardian style of steam journeys, albeit with modern engines.
3 ? Penrith
To the North of the Lake District, Penrith is home to fine pubs and the imposing 14th century Penrith Castle. One of the quietest areas in the Lake District, Penrith is also worth visiting for its walking and climbing options.
4 ? The Beatrix Potter Gallery
Another collection dedicated to one of the writers associated with the Lake District, the Beatrix Potter Gallery in Hawkshead focuses on the children?s author?s work, and is recommended for children and adults.
5 ? Keswick
A destination for serious walkers, Keswick also features climbing on Skiddaw, and walks around the Catbells fells. During the summer months visitors can also enjoy performances at the Theatre by the Lake.
6 ? Muncaster Castle
Home to a world class owl centre and extensive gardens, Muncaster Castle is an ideal choice for family days out in the Lake District.
7 ? Wastwater
One of the Lake District?s most isolated lakes, Waswater in Gosforth offers some of the best views in the region.
8 ? Ambleside
Located to the North of Lake Windermere, Ambleside is a regular destination for hikers, and usually becomes very busy during the summer. The village is also ideal for watercolour drawing and cottage accommodation.
9 ? Hawkshead
Hawkshead village is recommended for its cobbled streets and its ability to act as a hub for other parts of the Lake District, as well as for its excellent accommodation and galleries.
10 ? Bowness on Windermere Treasure Hunt
A good option for children and families, the Bowness on Windermere Treasure Hunt takes in a range of different treasure trails. Also recommended as a way to see some of the more beautiful parts of the lake area through a focused activity, the Treasure Hunt can form part of a more diverse holiday in the area.
