HUFFPSOT HILL - Siiiiix Mooooore Daaaaaaaaaaaays

Today is Halloween, or as it's known in political circles, "the end of surprise season." Donald Trump will record robocalls for Mitt Romney, making the telegraph the only form of telecommunication he hasn't ruined. And David Axelrod promised to shave his mustache if the president loses Michigan, Pennsylvania or Minnesota. Sadly, Eric Fehrnstrom has yet to say whether he'll get Lil' Wayne-style teardrops tattooed on his face if Romney loses North Carolina. This is HUFFPOST HILL for Wednesday, October 31st, 2012

OBAMA SURVEYS WRECKAGE IN NEW JERSEY - AP: "President Barack Obama is telling people recovering from Sandy's devastation along New Jersey's coastline that 'we are here for you, and we will not forget' Obama joined New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie and other officials to inspect damage from the massive storm that struck the East Coast. He saw flooded neighborhoods and sand-strewn streets during a tour that came less than a week before Election Day. Obama says the federal government is 'here for the long haul.' Christie, a supporter of Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney, says he 'can't thank the president enough' for his concern and compassion during the storm." [AP]

Obama totally won that devastating natural disaster! Slam dunk touchdown home run GOOOOOOOOOAAAAAAALLLLL: "President Obama gets sky-high marks for his response to Hurricane Sandy, which cut a brutal path along the country's East Coast on Monday, according to the latest release of the Washington Post-ABC News tracking poll. Nearly eight in 10 likely voters say the president has done an 'excellent' or 'good' job dealing with what's been labeled a 'super storm.' Almost as many give positive reviews to the federal government's response generally. Even two-thirds of those who support Republican Mitt Romney in next week's presidential election say Obama is doing well in this area. " [WaPo]

Most Americans support federal funding for natural disaster relief, despite our states' bountiful treasuries. Emily Swanson: "A new HuffPost/YouGov poll finds that a large majority of Americans think the federal government should help provide assistance to those impacted by natural disasters. Some politicians, including Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney, have in the past supported cuts for FEMA, the agency that provides such relief -- though Romney's campaign said this week that he would not cut FEMA. According to the survey, 64 percent of Americans favor the federal government providing assistance to communities impacted by natural disasters, while only 19 percent say that relief should be left to state and local governments. Even among Republicans, a 48 percent plurality said that the federal government should provide assistance, while 38 percent said it should be left to the states." [HuffPost]

@davidshepardson: Obama campaign's first Michigan TV ad features an auto worker wearing a Detroit Tigers hat, trods "Let Detroit Go Bankrupt" ground

WEIRD GOP RAPE COMMENT NEWSFLASH - We give this one three-and-a-half Akins. TPM: "John Koster, Republican nominee in Washington's First Congressional District, was captured on tape over the weekend explaining why he is opposed to abortion in the case of incest and rape. Incest he said, was 'so rare.' Then he turned to rape. 'On the rape thing, it's like, how does putting more violence onto a woman's body and taking the life of an innocent child that's the consequence of this crime, how does that make it better?" Koster said. 'You know what I mean?'" [TPM]

Just for the record: "The vast majority of Americans believe abortion should be legal in cases of rape or incest and when the life or health of the mother is at risk, according to a new HuffPost/YouGov poll. That finding puts most Americans at odds with the 13 Republican Senate candidates who have said they support making abortion illegal in all cases. According to the survey, at least 70 percent of respondents support keeping abortion legal for all of the three scenarios." [HuffPost's Emily Swanson]

DAILY DELANEY DOWNER - Arthur and Dave Jamieson: "When Joe Baron headed into work Wednesday morning, he and his colleagues were told to file for unemployment. Hurricane Sandy had wiped out all the cars at Baron's Dodge dealership in Bricktown, N.J., drowning a fleet of pickups and new Dodge Darts. Baron, an auto technician, had worked at the dealership for 23 years straight. 'I've worked all my life,' Baron said, stunned at his job loss but grateful his family was safe. 'Where am I going to go?' As he spoke, Baron was standing in a line for gas with hundreds of other Sandy survivors in Neptune, N.J. Crippling power outages, combined with the demand for gas to run generators and cars, has led to lines at New Jersey gas stations that stretch down the street and around the block." [HuffPost]

JOBS REPORT ON SCHEDULE - The Labor Department announced today that Barack Obama's Chicago machine politics thugs were undeterred by Hurricane Sandy and, as planned, will storm the Bureau of Labor Statistics armed with baseball bats spiked with nails. Also the jobs numbers will be released on Friday. Everything is under control. We will rebuild.

ROMNEY: OUR NATION WILL HEAL BY VOTING FOR MEEEEEEEEEE - Remember that scene from "Wedding Crashers" when Will Ferrell fake sobs alongside a mourning widow he wants to sleep with and then makes a gratuitous humping motion? This is like that... but political. Elise Foley: "After two days without rallies in the wake of Hurricane Sandy, Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney returned on Wednesday to campaigning in full, using his usual stump speech at a Florida campaign stop to criticize the president's record. And after calling for donations to support the Red Cross, he used the subject of the super-storm to segue to a call for voters to support him, too. 'We love all of our fellow citizens. We come together at times like this and we want to make sure that they have a speedy and quick recovery from their financial, and in many cases, personal loss,' Romney said to supporters at a rally in Tampa, Fla. 'Now people coming together is also what is going to happen, I believe, on Nov. 7,' he continued, referring to the day after the election." [HuffPost]

National unity over: "Vice President Joe Biden tore into Mitt Romney on Wednesday for running ads with a widely debunked claim about Chrysler and General Motors shipping American jobs to China, saying it calls into question the character of the Republican presidential nominee. During a campaign event in Sarasota, Fla., Biden called the latest ad one of the 'most scurrilous' and 'most flagrantly dishonest ads I can remember in my political career.'" [HuffPost's Jen Bendery]

"Chasing the Hill," a web show about a California congressional race, is seeking donations. "West Wing" fans still experiencing withdrawal shakes should check it out.

THE ROMNEY CAMPAIGN WILL SEE YOUR RELIEF EFFORTS AND RAISE YOU OPTICS - BuzzFeed has a behind-the-scenes look at how the Romney campaign's bogus "relief event" yesterday came to be: "The plan was for supporters to bring hurricane relief supplies to the event and then deliver the bags of canned goods, packages of diapers, and cases of water bottles to the candidate, who would be perched behind a table along with a slew of volunteers and his Ohio right-hand man, Senator Rob Portman. To complete the project and photo op, Romney would lead his crew in carrying the goods out of the gymnasium and into the Penske rental truck parked outside. But the last-minute nature of the call for donations left some in the campaign concerned that they would end up with an empty truck. So the night before the event, campaign aides went to a local Wal-Mart and spent $5,000 on granola bars, canned food, and diapers to put on display while they waited for donations to come in, according to one staffer. (The campaign confirmed that it 'did donate supplies to the relief effort,' but would not specify how much it spent.)" [BuzzFeed]

Donald Trump is recording robo-calls for Romney/Ryan. Because having Donald Trump interrupt your dinner is a tried and true way of winning votes. He also might make some appearances on behalf of the Republican ticket. [ThinkProgress]

Republican congressional candidate Richard Tisei's latest campaign ad -- a tranquil beach scene and nothing more -- is being marketed as a "break" from campaign ads.

MITT ROMNEY. HA. HA. - LA Times: "The joke is on Mitt Romney, according to a survey of monologues by late-night comedians, and not in a good way. The study found that the Republican presidential nominee has been the butt of TV's top funny-men more than twice as often as President Obama. The monologues of the top nighttime talk shows targeted Romney 148 times since the political party conventions this summer, compared with 62 jokes aimed at Obama, said the Center for Media and Public Affairs at George Mason University. 'Romney is leading in the humor race,' said Robert Lichter, president of the media research organization, 'but being the biggest joke is a race nobody wants to win.'" [LA Times]

Mike Huckabee thinks Obama voters will go to hell, the same place he thinks Mitt Romney is going for being a Mormon. "In a new ad, the former Arkansas governor and ordained Southern Baptist minister warns Christians that their votes 'will affect the future and be recorded in eternity' and they must cast a ballot that will 'stand the test of fire.' The video, entitled 'Test of Fire,' features symbolic fiery imagery and is narrated by Huckabee." So a vote for Gary Johnson is, what... a lengthy stay in purgatory? Or some kind of "Left Behind" situation? [HuffPost]

$10,000 BET, AXELROD STYLE - As polls show President Obama's lead diminishing in Minnesota, Michigan and Pennsylvania, senior Obama campaign strategist David Axelrod vowed that he would shave his signature mustache if the president loses any of those states. To be fair, if Obama does lose any of those states -- and likely the election -- Axelrod would have enough money coming in from whatever political consulting firm he signs on to that he could fly in Hollywood's best hair guy and have a new mustache grafted onto his face. "I will come on 'Morning Joe' and I will shave off my mustache of 40 years if we lose any of those three states," he said on the MSNBC morning show. Joe Scarborough, for his part, promised to grow one if the president takes North Carolina or Florida. [HuffPost's Elise Foley]

The American Mustache Institute is not pleased: "It's incredibly irresponsible for Axelrod to be playing games with such an exceptionally powerful mustache," the institute's chairman Dr. Aaron Perlut told US News. "There are very few people in positions of power who are mustached Americans, so for he to even jest about removing his lip sweater is somewhat offensive to the entire American mustached community." [US News]

@AxelrodsStache: Bring it Scarborough!

***Game change alert*** Obama is giving up on Arizona. "Our map is set, unlike the Romney campaign, which is flailing, trying to make the map different than it is," Obama campaign manager Jim Messina told reporters on a conference call this morning when the subject came up. "I believe on the ground we continue to show real enthusiasm to get to 270 electoral votes in all these battleground states. We understand the several maps we need to get there." [Politico]

CHRIS CHRISTIE BULLIES HALLOWEEN - The New Jersey governor signed an executive order today postponing Halloween in the Garden State until Monday, though he could have just as easily shouted it down in a public forum. "In too many communities in our state, the damage and losses from this storm are still being sorted out, and dangerous conditions abound even as our emergency management and response officials continue their work," he said in a statement. [Star Ledger]

"3 Photos Of Senate Candidate Richard Carmona Getting Sweaty"

BECAUSE YOU'VE READ THIS FAR - Crying child is tired of "Bronco Bamma" and Mitt Romney.

'Tis better to give than to receive... so long as that giving isn't wasted by irresponsible welfare queens on rims or purses or whatever. Elise Foley: "Rep. Steve King (R-Iowa) said on Tuesday that federal aid for people impacted by Hurricane Sandy should be approved only with a specific spending plan in place so funds are not used for 'Gucci bags and massage parlors,' like after Hurricane Katrina. 'I want to get them the resources that are necessary to lift them out of this water and the sand and the ashes and the death that's over there in the East Coast and especially in the Northeast,' King said during a Tuesday evening debate in Mason City, Iowa." Open education has at least three components:? free access to learning resources; digital access to formerly analog learning resoources (e.g. instructors in classrooms); and learning accomplishment validation (becoming common) or credentialing (rare at this time).? More broadly defined, open education is ?root? for any society desiring to be both democratic and prosperous.? Open education has not made the transition to Open Source Everything, but needs to do so ? open education along with open books (businesses with public charters), open data, open government, open repositories and open science, all need the other opens in order to be agile, inter-operable, and scalable in an affordable and sustainable manner.? The stakeholders within the legacy education domain are largely afraid, ignorant, and in opposition to change.? They must be embraced, informed, and led.? ?Open? is a meme, a mind-set, and a method.? It is a seed crystal for a local to global holistic approach to education, intelligence, and research ? three domains that must be integrated ? and the foundation for open civil society, open commerce, open government, open law enforcement, open media, open military, and open non-government/non-profit.

nullity auto: Not An Alternative Fish Story? ? bookseller16 ... - Gino ...

What exactly is fishing? I suppose it may be a sporting activity, a way to earn a living, although I am more of a mind to deem it to be a hobby as it is the ideal antidote for fighting any amount of stress.

Fish is an important food item which we cannot do without and we can always rely on working fishermen to keep the stocks plentiful. On the other hand, fishing is also a leisure interest and is one of the most popular hobbies.

The hobby of fishing continues to grow and there?s more money spent on it than arguably any other on account of the cost of buying a licence, fishing tackle, bait, clothes and transport etc. Often creating your own, obtaining second hand or borrowing it allows us to keep the costs down to a minimum.

Why is fishing a popular hobby? Just because it?s an excellent means of relieving stress and tension. It also helps anxious teenagers to adjust their way of thinking and form more constructive qualities, attitudes and activities.

You can find lots of family crafts and hobbies that could be taken on and enjoyed by one and all, this includes fishing.

Children in particular are keen to find out how to use bait in order to catch themselves a fish. Actually using and trying out each and every item of fishing gear in conjunction with a camping holiday may make them feel like characters in a Mark Twain novel.

It is necessary that we all realise the true worth of fishing as a recreational hobby, specially as it is just one of a few hobbies for men and women that they can both participate in and enjoy.

People of all ages enjoy fishing with their families or to take up many more family crafts and hobbies in order to alleviate the anxiety or boredom which lifestyles of today might bring about.

Fishing helps you to take in and enjoy all the benefits and beauties given to us by nature, such as rivers and riverbanks, birds and other animals. Fishing is a much preferred way to relax and take in the air.

Family together time has fallen considerably in recent years and for that matter so has the time spent interacting with the kids so any time set aside for family crafts and hobbies should help to restore a happy family environment.

Although there are many hobbies for men and women that you could do, chances are you can include the kids or your best friends in these pursuits too; it would be time well spent.

Catching the fish is the best feeling, regardless of if you catch them to cook and eat or just for the pleasure in catching them and releasing them again. The time we spend connecting with friends and family is well worth making the effort.

A great time can be had by all if you invest your leisure time wisely in family crafts and hobbies. The fun and learning experiences you acquire from such hobbies, like fishing, can make them family activities which will never be forgotten.

Fortunately, this has turned out not to be another fish story. However, if fishing as a hobby doesn?t float your boat then hopefully it will now motivate you to consider books on hobbies for men and women and the children too, to help find one that does.

Develop Your Book Marketing Strategy Now! | Cyber Beasts

Do you think your book is going to be a best seller because it's awesome? Are you positive that everyone will want to buy a copy of your book? It might be bestseller material but if you don't market and promote it, no one is going to know about your great book. It takes a lot of time and effort to make a book a bestseller.

The best time to decide on your book marketing strategy is while you are writing your book. Don't wait until you finish writing your book.

Here are some marketing activities you can begin working on right now while you are writing your book.

Become a well-known speaker in your community.

If you have a fear of speaking join a Toastmasters International chapter in your area now, or take the Dale Carnegie's Effective Speaking training program. I have done both and they can give you the confidence and knowledge you need to be a good, effective speaker. You have an important message to share on your expert topic. You must be able to present yourself well and build your name. You can begin speaking now to get the practice so that by the time your book is published you are ready to go on the speaking circuit.

Build Your Mailing List.

Start doing Google searches for organizations and groups you can speak to: Women's groups, business organizations, Rotary Clubs, personal development groups, plus groups that specialize in your book topic.

Build Your Testimonial List.

Write down the contact information of people you want to give you a testimonial for your book. Get 20 names or more. Once a preliminary copy of your book is available you can write to your list and ask if they would like to write a testimonial for your book. It is best to ask people who have titles that would be of interest to your potential readers. You can put the testimonials in your book and on your website.

Be the Expert.

If you solve problems for your clients, then you are an expert. Now continue to build on that by reading, learning, participating in seminars that can expand your knowledge in your field of expertise.

Promote Yourself.

This is no time to be shy. Start writing articles in your area of expertise and get them out there in the Internet article-writing world. Begin reading promotional materials you receive and save the ones that catch your attention. Begin practicing writing your own promotional materials for your pamphlets and brochures.

Create a website to sell your book.

Get help--find a student from your local college to help you. Sign up for a Paypal credit card account to begin your book-selling program. Your website will promote your book, speaking engagements, and anything else to get that recognition you deserve. There is a lot involved in setting up your website so if you are not knowledgeable in this area get help.

Write a Book Proposal.

This is the best marketing tool you can have. Get a book on how to write a book proposal. There are many books available on this subject. A book proposal can help you with your planning. You will include your marketing and promotional strategies in it. Even if you are planning to self-publish your book I recommend that you still prepare a book proposal.

Create a Blog.

If your book is a long way from being published, start a Blog. You can keep a journal or business tips on it and soon readers will be coming to your Blog. This is a way for people to get to know you and for you to get that expert recognition before your book is written.

Learn Amazon.

Review the guidelines for getting your book listed on Amazon.com. Be ready so that when your book is published you can list it on Amazon. Find out the requirements, costs, etc.

"Book Marketing" Internet Search.

Do a Google search for "book marketing." You will discover some of the newest services. Google has a book marketing service now. Also Facebook is a good way to build a list of people who might be interested in your book. You can talk about the book before it comes out and build your list. Once your book is published and available you can announce it to your Facebook friends. There is MySpace and many other ways to promote your book online.

These are just a few ideas to help you develop your marketing plan. Don't wait until your book is finished. Begin working on as many of the above as you can now. Focus on one marketing idea at a time. Avoid getting overwhelmed. "Inch by inch it's a cinch." I imagine that you thought that once your book was written the rest would be easy. Hah! You've only just begun. Stay focused, set up a plan, take action, and you could have a bestseller.

(AP) ? Rev. Danny Kirk Sr. greeted everyone walking into his Texas church on Sundays with a big hug and an "I love you." His weekdays were spent visiting folks in the hospital or mowing lawns and doing household repairs for members in need.

Parishioners, who described Kirk as a dedicated minister with a bubbly personality and a knack for remembering the names of his church's 800 members, are now looking for answers following his violent death.

Police in the Fort Worth suburb of Forest Hill said Kirk was killed Monday by a man who rammed a car into a wall at his Greater Sweethome Missionary Baptist Church, then chased Kirk and fatally beat him with an electric guitar.

Investigators said they don't know the motive or if Kirk knew his attacker, who police subdued by using a Taser but died after being taken into custody. His name hasn't been released.

Hundreds of people gathered outside the church, where crime-scene tape was wrapped around a small statue of Jesus near the wrecked car. Some hugged each other and cried, while others shared memories of Kirk.

"He really was concerned about our souls," Montoya McNeil, a church member for eight years, said as she wiped away tears. "You looked forward to being here. ... I'm not asking God why, because I know where he (Kirk) is, but we won't get those big bear hugs and those great sermons anymore."

Claudie Loftin, an associate minister, called Kirk a hands-on pastor who "didn't run around wearing a suit.

"He would wear jeans or a sweatsuit because he said he never knew how he would be needed to help, and that's what a pastor does. He was a man of integrity."

Forest Hill Police Chief Dan Dennis said the suspect drove his car into a church wall before noon Monday, apparently on purpose. The suspect got out of the car and began to attack the pastor in the parking lot before chasing him into the church, while the secretary hid and called 911, Dennis said.

Police arrived to find the suspect assaulting Kirk with an electric guitar from inside the church, Dennis said. An officer used a Taser on the suspect, handcuffed him and put him in the back of a patrol car.

By then, Kirk had died, Dennis said. A maintenance worker who tried to help Kirk was injured and taken to an area hospital. His condition was unknown.

Dennis said the suspect was found unresponsive shortly after being detained and was pronounced dead at a local hospital. Kirk fought back during the attack, Dennis said, but it's unclear if that played any role in the suspect's death. An autopsy was being performed on the suspect to determine the cause of death.

Dennis said he didn't know if the suspect knew Kirk, attended the church or why he might have attacked the pastor.

Former Forest Hill Mayor James Gosey said Kirk started the church in 1995 in a strip mall before building the red-brick church.

Kirk was also an unofficial volunteer chaplain who occasionally counseled members of a local high school football team, Fort Worth school district spokesman Clint Bond said.

Loftin, the associate minister, said that church members were grieving but would recover from the loss "with the help of God."

The seventeenth tropical depression of the eastern Pacific Ocean hurricane season formed early on October 30 and quickly strengthened into Tropical Storm Rosa. Infrared data from NASA's Aqua satellite revealed strong convection in the storm's center, hinting at that intensification.

When NASA's Aqua satellite flew over Tropical Depression 17E at 5:41 a.m. EDT (0951 UTC) on Tuesday, October 30, the Atmospheric Infrared Sounder (AIRS) instrument took an infrared picture of the storm. The AIRS data showed a large, circular area of very strong convection (rising air that forms thunderstorms that make up a tropical cyclone) around the storm's center. Scientists identify the convection as strong, because the air pushes cloud tops of those thunderstorms to the top of the troposphere where temperatures are as cold as or colder than -63 Fahrenheit (-52 Celsius). The AIRS data showed that those clouds were near that temperature, indicating they were high in the atmosphere, and when they're that high, they're powerful, and are typically indicative of heavy rainfall.

At 8 a.m. EDT (1500 UTC) the center of Tropical Storm Rosa was located near latitude 14.5 north and longitude 116.5 west. Rosa is moving toward the west-northwest near 7 mph (11 kph) away from the mainland. Rosa is expected to continue in that direction and turn more to the west in the next couple of days. Rosa's estimated minimum central pressure is 1004 millibars.

Rosa's maximum sustained winds were near 40 mph (65 kph) and the National Hurricane Center expects some strengthening later today and October 31 before weakening on November 1.

SEC taking deeper look at Nasdaq's Facebook plan

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Securities regulators are taking a closer look at Nasdaq OMX's $62 million plan to compensate brokers who suffered losses from the exchange operator's botched handling of Facebook's initial public offering.

The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission said it was instituting proceedings to more closely review the plan in light of the "legal and policy issues raised" by other market players.

"The Commission believes that questions are raised as to whether Nasdaq's accommodation proposal... would promote just and equitable principles of trade, protect investors and the public interest, and not be designed to permit unfair discrimination between customers, issuers, brokers, or dealers," the SEC wrote in a notice posted online on Monday.

A Nasdaq spokesman declined to comment on the SEC's decision to extend the timeframe for reviewing the proposal. However, on the company's earnings call earlier this month, Nasdaq Chief Executive Bob Greifeld said he anticipated such a move by the SEC.

"To the extent the SEC requires more time, then we would agree to that, so I'm not here to predict what they may do, but end of the year is a reasonable guess," Greifeld said at the time.

Market-makers like Knight Capital Group Inc, UBS AG, Citigroup Inc, and others, say they collectively lost around $500 million on May 18 when Facebook first debuted on public markets. A technology issue delayed the IPO for 30 minutes and in the interim, many orders were not included in the opening cross.

That led to delays in many clients' orders being put through and hours-long waits for confirmations.

Some orders were lost all together, while others were entered repeatedly when market-makers did not receive the electronic confirmations they expected. Those usually arrive within seconds.

Nasdaq has since disclosed that the SEC's enforcement division is investigating the series of events leading up to the $16 billion IPO.

Nasdaq had originally drafted a $40 million compensation plan for brokers who lost money, but later raised it to $62 million amid criticism that the amount was too low.

Since then, some market-makers and brokers have said they would back the amended proposal. But other market participants have continued to balk at the sum being offered.

The SEC's latest announcement that it will "institute proceedings" to determine whether or not to approve or disapprove Nasdaq's proposal is a new, procedural change created by the 2010 Dodd-Frank financial reform law.

The law aimed to streamline the process for the commission to review rule changes filed by exchanges, which act as self-regulatory organizations.

It requires the SEC to either approve, disapprove or institute such proceedings for proposed rule changes no more than 45 days after an exchange submits it for consideration.

If the SEC does not act within the 45 days, the rule automatically gets approved. In this case, the deadline for the SEC to act was October 30.

Typically the SEC will institute proceedings to more closely review rule changes if they are novel, complicated or somewhat more controversial.

A decision to institute proceedings "does not indicate that the Commission has reached any conclusions," the SEC said in its notice.

The SEC will seek additional public comments to help it reach a final decision on whether to accept Nasdaq's compensation plan proposal.

The agency said among the main complaints it has already received from commenters include concerns about the "limited categories" of claims eligible for compensation, Nasdaq's method for determining losses and a requirement for member firms to waive all claims against the exchange operator for their losses.

Delaying radiation therapy after hysterectomy ups risk of uterine ...

? Uterine Cancer news ? Oct 30, 2012

Waiting too long after a hysterectomy to begin radiation therapy may increase the risk of uterine cancer recurrence, according to a new study from researchers at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit.

The study shows that for patients with uterine cancer not receiving chemotherapy, tumors were more likely to return if radiation therapy was delayed nine weeks or longer following surgery, with only 43 percent having relapse-free survival after five years.

By comparison, patients starting radiation treatment soon after surgery had a five-year relapse-free survival of 90 percent.

?Our data suggests that a shorter interval of time between hysterectomy and start of radiation treatment may be beneficial for patients,? says lead author Mohamed Elshaikh, M.D., senior staff physician in the Department of Radiation Oncology at Henry Ford Hospital.

Study results will be presented Monday, October 30 at the 54th Annual Meeting of the American Society for Radiation Oncology (ASTRO) in Boston.

Endometrial cancers mainly arise from the tissue lining the uterus. They are the most common gynecologic cancers in the US, with more than 43,000 women diagnosed and an estimated 7,950 dying from the disease in 2010, according to the National Cancer Institute.

A total hysterectomy (surgical removal of the uterus) is the most common approach for treatment of endometrial cancers.

To assess the impact of time between hysterectomy and the start of radiation treatment on tumor recurrence, Dr. Elshaikh and his colleagues conducted a retrospective study of patients who underwent surgery for uterine cancer between 1988 and 2010.

Of the 1,450 Henry Ford patients reviewed with stage I-III uterine cancer, 308 received radiation therapy without chemotherapy after hysterectomy with at least one year follow-up. The median age for patients was 65 and the median follow-up was six years.

About 75 percent of the study group started radiation therapy less than nine weeks after surgery, while the others began treatment nine weeks or more after surgery.

Among the study group, there were 43 cases where the cancer returned. Tumor recurrence was significantly associated with treatment delay of nine weeks or longer.

Along with Dr. Elshaikh, Henry Ford study co-authors are Richard Cattaneo II, M.D.; Gordon Jacobsen, MS; and Rabbie Hanna, M.D.

Hurricane Babies: Sandy Might Trigger Labor

Robyn Moreno, due to give birth, paid little attention to Hurricane Sandy, until police circled her Battery Park City neighborhood in Lower Manhattan and ordered mandatory evacuations in anticipation of a record tidal surge.

Just before the historic storm hit New York City, the 36-year-old freelance writer and her husband had talked about taking a short vacation in the Hamptons, on Long Island's East End, before the baby arrived.

"I was looking forward to a relaxing week," said Moreno. "We fixed the nursery, and put the crib together and suddenly the big rainstorm came. Holy cow ? what are we going to do? I am going to have a baby in the middle of a storm, and I live in Zone A?"

Along with Manhattan's Battery Park City, Zone A includes Coney Island in Brooklyn, Far Rockaway and Broad Channel in Queens, and other low-lying areas on Staten Island.

"We had to be prepared to have the baby," Moreno said. "I had to pack a hospital bag and a baby bag, a car seat ? literally seven bags of stuff."

Having a baby in the midst of a natural disaster takes on mythical proportions in the world of medicine. Some say that the plummeting barometric pressure can trigger labor. Others say mammals instinctively forestall labor in a stressful environment.

"After delivering over 1,000 babies as an obstetrician, I can tell you that most OBs have heard the saying that storms and full moons often mean a busier day or night on labor and delivery," said Dr. Jennifer Ashton, an obstetrician in Englewood, N.J. "The theory is that a drop in barometric pressure is associated with the rupturing of the membranes of the amniotic sac, causing a pregnant woman to 'break her water.'"

Although hard scientific evidence is nonexistent, Ashton said that one retrospective study published in a midwifery journal reported a "significant increase in deliveries" in the 24 hours after a storm compared with before a storm.

"The link between weather and lunar cycles extends beyond childbirth; there are associations between migraines, other headaches and musculoskeletal pain," said Ashton.

Dr. Jacques Moritz, director of the division of gynecology at St. Luke's-Roosevelt Hospital in Manhattan, debunks the storm theory as a myth. "Mammals in general have stress hormones that prevent them going into labor," he said. "Generally, they don't have babies when there is stress outside."

How sweep it is: Giants finish off Tigers

DETROIT (AP) ? Kung Fu Panda, The Freak, The Beard and all their seed-throwing buddies are on top of baseball ? again.

They may be under the radar, unappreciated and unexpected. But they're unassailable, the winner of two World Series titles in the last three years.

Their sweep of the Detroit Tigers, completed Sunday night with a 4-3, 10-inning win, was simply historic.

No National League team had swept a World Series since the 1990 Cincinnati Reds.

No NL team had won twice in a three-year span since the Big Red Machine in 1975-76.

"I'm numb, really, the fact that we've won two World Series in the last three years," Giants manager Bruce Bochy said. "This will sink in, but right now, I'm kind of speechless on that."

This happens in the NL only slightly more often than appearances of Haley's Comet. They are just the fifth NL team to accomplish the feat since the 1907-08 Chicago Cubs, joining the 1921-22 New York Giants, the St. Louis Cardinals of '44 and '46, the Los Angeles Dodgers of '63 and '65, and that Big Red Machine.

And these Giants did it with small ball, becoming only the fifth big league team ? and the first since the 1982 Cardinals ? to win the title after finishing dead last in home runs during the regular season.

"Our guys had a date with destiny," Giants general manager Brian Sabean said.

Marco Scutaro delivered one more key hit this October, a go-ahead single with two outs in the 10th inning against Phil Coke.

On a night of biting cold, stiff breezes and some rain, the Giants sealed the title when Sergio Romo got Triple Crown winner Miguel Cabrera to look at strike three for the final out.

"Tonight was a battle," said Giants catcher Buster Posey, the NL batting champion. "And I think tonight was a fitting way for us to end it because those guys played hard. They didn't stop, and it's an unbelievable feeling."

Posey, the only player in the starting lineup when San Francisco win the 2010 clincher at Texas, celebrated with his teammates in the center of the Comerica Park diamond. In the clubhouse, they hoisted the trophy, passed it around and shouted the name of each player who held it.

"World Series champions!" hollered outfielder Hunter Pence, who started the pregame seed-tossing ritual.

Pedro Sandoval, nicknamed Kung Fu Panda, was benched for most of the 2010 Series and then went 8 for 16 this year, including a three-homer performance in Game 1, to win MVP honors.

"I was ready for the moment," he said. "I was waiting for the opportunity to be in the playoffs again."

Cabrera delivered the first big hit for Detroit, interrupting San Francisco's run of dominant pitching with a two-run, wind-blown homer over the right-field wall in the third.

Posey put the Giants ahead 3-2 with a two-run homer in the sixth and Delmon Young hit a tying home run in the bottom half.

San Francisco then won a battle of bullpens.

Ryan Theriot led off the 10th with a single against Phil Coke, moved up on Brandon Crawford's sacrifice and scored on a shallow single by Scutaro, the MVP of the NL championship series. Center fielder Austin Jackson made a throw home, to no avail.

"We were very adamant that we have to step on their throats," Giants pitcher Barry Zito said. "We saw what they did to New York."

Santiago Casilla got one out in the ninth for the win. Romo struck out the side in the bottom of the 10th for his third save of the Series.

The Giants finished the month with seven straight wins and their seventh Series championship. They handed the Tigers their seventh straight World Series loss dating to 2006.

"Obviously, there was no doubt about it," Tigers manager Jim Leyland said. "It was freaky. I would have never guessed we would have swept the Yankees and I would have never guessed the Giants would have swept us."

The Giants combined for a 1.42 ERA, outscored the Tigers 16-6 and held them to a .159 batting average ? third-lowest in Series history ahead of only the 1966 Baltimore Orioles (.146) and 1966 Dodgers (.142).

"This was the worst day of my career," Tigers catcher Alex Avila said. "They played great, and we didn't. It's that simple."

The NL has won three in a row for the first time in 30 years. San Francisco won six elimination games en route to the title.

Once again, San Francisco took an early lead. Pence hit a one-hop drive over the center-field fence for a double and Brandon Belt tripled off the right-field wall on the next pitch for a 1-0 lead in the second.

The next inning, Cabrera gave the Tigers a reason to think this night might get them back on track to end a title drought dating to 1984.

With two outs and a runner on first, Cabrera lofted an opposite-field fly to right ? off the bat, it looked like a routine out shy of the warning track. But with winds gusting over 25 mph, the ball kept carrying, Pence kept drifting toward the wall and the crowd kept getting louder.

Just like that, it was gone.

Cabrera's homer gave Detroit its first lead of the Series, ended its 20-inning scoreless streak. Trailing for the first time since Game 4 of the NL championship series, Posey and the Giants put a dent in Detroit's optimism. Scutaro led off the sixth with a single and clapped all the way around the bases when Posey sent a shot that sailed just inside the left-field foul pole for a 3-2 lead.

Young, the ALCS MVP against the Yankees, made it 3-all with another opposite-field homer to right, this one a no-doubt drive.

But other Tigers disappointed. Prince Fielder, signed to a $214 million deal last winter, finished 1 for 14 (.071) against the Giants without an RBI. Cabrera, the first Triple Crown winner in 45 years, was 3 for 13 (.231) with three RBIs.

"You just don't get to write your own script," Fielder said.

San Francisco did. The Giants overcame a 2-0 deficit against Cincinnati in the best-of-division series by winning three straight on the road. They overcame a 3-1 hole against defending champion St. Louis in the league championship. And then they became the first champion that hit the fewest home runs in the majors since St. Louis in 1982.

Brian Wilson ? aka The Beard ? missed nearly the entire season. Tim Lincecum ? aka The Freak, was ace of the staff during the 2010 title run. He morphed into a middle reliever who held the Tigers hitless in a pair of outings.

Sandoval said "heart" was the critical ingredient.

"It's amazing what they accomplished," Bochy said. "I think when you look at this club, the terms 'teamwork,' 'team play,' and 'play as a team,' that's used loosely, but these guys truly did. They set aside their own agenda and asked what's best for the club. And we put guys in different roles, nobody ever said a word, complained or anything, and that's the only way it got done."

NOTES: Detroit 2B Omar Infante broke his left hand when he was hit by a pitch from Casilla in the ninth. ... Ann Romney, wife of Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney, was at the game. ... In addition to the bat Sandoval used for his first two homers in the opener, the Hall of Fame received Ryan Vogelsong's jersey from his Game 3 win, Bochy's warm-up jacket, Gregor Blanco's glove, Pence's bat ? named "Tim" ? Scutaro's spikes, Brandon Crawford's cap and Matt Cain's spikes.
