Samsung's dual-display Windows 8 laptop and other prototypes, hands-on

See that? It's not your daddy's flip hybrid tablet -- it's the new dual-display laptop prototype from the fine people at Samsung. The body of the notebook is certainly in the vein of a MacBook Air or ultrabook, with slim metal slides that taper off into a point. The palm rests, meanwhile, are a brushed metal, with black chiclet-style keys above. On the bezel above the screen is a camera.

The magic, however, doesn't happen until you close the thing, turning on a display on the hood. Yep, it's yet another attempt to capitalize on Windows 8's dual-nature. Inside, you've got a fully functioning laptop and outside you've a touchscreen tablet that, yes, utilizes everyone's favorite proprietary stylus, the S-pen, and there's also a rear facing camera on the outside. Perhaps it's all that functionality packed inside, but this prototype is certainly heavier than your standard ultrabook, and unlike most systems, a lot of that weight is located in the display -- we're sure there's a fair amount of internals located up there.

This being a prototype, the Samsung rep we spoke with had no clue on what such a device might cost or when it might come to market -- or even if this thing will ever see the light of day, so don't get your dual-hopes up just yet. The hybrid was sitting right next to the 2,560 x 1,440 Series 9 prototype we recently scoped out and in front of a wall of concepts that explore the brave new world of elastic form factors to their fullest. Check out a video and some notes on the other devices after the jump.

5 Traits Of Successful People

Successful people are enviable, but they were not born as successes - they worked hard at being so.

It takes a lot of determination to go after your dreams and be triumphant in the end, but successful people are those who know the value of the journey, and the lessons along the way - more than the destination. They are aware that it's never easy, but they go on.

Success, per se, means different things for different people. To many, it means being able to examine yourself and be proud of what you'd become.

What are successful people made of? Is there a formula for success? Below are 5 traits common to successful people.

They have clearly defined goals. Successful people know what they want. They write it down, think of a plan to reach those goals, and align their actions and decisions towards it fulfilment. They don't just dream about accomplishing it - they take action and work hard until they get it. Successful people are not just dreamers; they are doers - which are probably the most important trait all successful
people have.

They take responsibility for all their actions and decisions. Successful people know that it's very easy to make mistakes, but what makes them a cut above the rest is that they own up to every mistake - not blaming others or making excuses. They know that every situation they are in is a result of their choices and decisions. To emulate a true success, recognize that you alone are the master of your destiny. Whatever success or failure you encounter is a product of your own actions; and every aspect of your life is your responsibility. Stop making excuses, quit the blame game and own up to everything - it takes guts to do it, but as they say, no guts, no glory.

They are persistent. Successful people do not give up without a fight - they take true determined action towards the accomplishment of their goals. They are not known to start on a task, and quit when things get tough. If all people gave up once they encounter problems, then there will be no successful people ever. Remember, true successes see obstacles as opportunities, and mistakes as lessons. Failure does not faze them - in fact, it motivates them to try harder or think of better ways to tackle the task at hand.

They are excellent at time management. Successful people do not necessarily do things hurriedly, but they do know how to make wise use of their time. Life isn't a contest on who does things faster, but rather, it's a test on who does more quality work with the time they are given. Remember, if it takes too long for a person to complete a task, he ends up accomplishing less than his full potential. Not only that - the longer you take to finish something, then the higher the possibility of your interest waning, and your determination decreasing. One of the most important strategies for using your time wisely is to drastically reduce the time you waste. Stop devoting your attention on things that don't matter, and start using your time for things that bring you closer to success.

They get up after a fall. Successful people are quite good at overcoming failure. They do not easily get discouraged when faced with defeat. They take risks, but fully recognize the possibility of failing that comes with taking risks. In order to be successful, never be afraid of criticism or taking hits on your self-confidence. In the journey towards success, there will always be those who will tell you that you can't. Don't let these people and circumstances rob you of your self-esteem - get up and prove them wrong! And even when things do not go exactly as you want, you have to realize that you always have a second chance to redeem yourself and finally achieve success. If you have clear weaknesses, simply realign your strategies to work around these weaknesses. Successful people make the most of what they're given and don't let minor (or sometimes even major) obstacles to make them lose their focus.

With all of these, one thing becomes clear - success is not easy. It takes pure determination to reach it. In life, always remember, quitters never win.

Parole board hears chilling details of Lennon shooting

New York State Dept. of Corrections

Mark David Chapman is seen in this May 15, 2012, photo from the New York State Department of Corrections.

By Jim Gold, NBC News

The killer of ex-Beatle John Lennon says he used hollow point bullets to shoot the singer ?because they were more deadly.?

Mark David Chapman retold chilling details of his Dec. 8, 1980, crime during a New York parole board hearing on Aug. 22. He was denied parole for a seventh time the next day and remains at Wende Correctional Facility in western New York. The parole department released transcripts of the hearing Wednesday.

Chapman said he was living in Hawaii when he decided to target Lennon ?because he was very famous.?

He said he also considered targeting television host Johnny Carson and actor George C. Scott.

But Lennon was more famous, Chapman said. He insisted he had no anger toward Lennon:??If he was less famous than three or four other people on the list, he would not have been shot.?

Chapman said he bought the gun he used in Honolulu and needed only to show a driver?s license to get it. However, he said he?got the hollow-point bullets from an old friend in Atlanta who was a police officer.

?I made a phone call in New York and the fellow said, ?you?re not going to get any bullets out of me. It?s just not done here.??

He said he told his Atlanta friend he needed the bullets for protection.

?I didn?t tell him what I was going to do,? Chapman said.

When asked why he chose hollow-point, Chapman responded ?Because they were more deadly.?

Asked if he wanted to ?inflict death,? on Lennon, Chapman responded, ?Yes. Absolutely.?

Watch TODAY's morning news coverage from the day the legendary musician was assassinated outside his New York City apartment building.

Chapman said he had flown from Hawaii to New York twice to check out Lennon?s apartment building, called the Dakota.

He said on one trip, he saw the film ?Ordinary People,? and called his wife, who was in Hawaii, and told her of his deadly plan but that he decided not to go through with it.

The compulsion to kill grew again after he returned to Hawaii, so he flew back to New York without telling his wife he planned to kill Lennon, said Chapman, who was 25 at the time.

Chapman said that on the day he shot Lennon, he staked out the Dakota from before noon and talked to him early in the day.

?He was very kind to me? and signed an album while his wife, Yoko Ono, waited in a limousine, Chapman said.

?Very cordial and very decent man,? Chapman said.??? But I was so compelled to commit murder that nothing would have dragged me away from that building.?

Just before 11 p.m., Lennon and Ono arrived at the apartment building. Ono?got out of the car first, Chapman said, and went into the alcove of the Dakota as Lennon lingered at the car a moment.

?And then when Mr. Lennon passed me I turned, pulled out my weapon and shot him in the back,? Chapman said.

The record, he said,?shows him calling out ?Mr. Lennon,? but he told the parole board he didn?t say that.

?I just shot him,? he said.

Chapman fired five shots with a .38-caliber revolver, hitting Lennon four times in front of Ono and others.

There was a scream, and the Dakota doorman, Jose, grabbed Chapman?s pistol, the gunman told the parole board.

Chapman said he was carrying a copy of J.D. Salinger?s ?The Catcher in the Rye? when he shot Lennon. He claimed to identify with the main character, ?who seemed to be lost and troubled.?

While in prison, Chapman said, he has been in his cell writing letters, reading and thinking.

He also said he has been having?conjugal visits with his wife ?pretty steady? for 20 years. His wife lives in Hawaii, he said.

He also said he has a ?deep relationship with Christ? that started when he was in a Christian camp at age 16.

?So this is obviously very embarrassing for me now, having committed murder,? Chapman said.

If he were to be paroled, Chapman said, he would go to Medina, N.Y., about 50 miles northeast of Buffalo, where a minister whom his wife met offered to refurbish an apartment and give him two jobs on his farm.

Chapman said he had corresponded with the pastor but?met him just two days before the parole hearing.

The reason for the crime, according to Chapman: ?Attention, bottom line.?

He said he received the attention but now he feels it was an??absolutely ridiculously selfish act to take another human life so that I could be pumped up into, you know, something that I wasn?t to begin with.?

He also told a parole commissioner, ?Fame is ridiculous. It holds no value.?

?It was a very selfish act and I deeply regret it,? Chapman told the board. ?I?m sorry for my crime.?

Should Germany Be Blamed for Cooperation with Belarus Police ...

Germany equipped Belarusian police

Scandalous news hit many media outlets this week in Germany: German police have been training their Belarusian counterparts for years.?

This raised many eyebrows?because of the serious human rights violations perpetrated?by Belarusian security services. In addition, the German media confuse words by calling the Belarusian security services "militia", which has a very negative connotation in German.?

The question remains whether Germany has trained Belarusian riot police units or ordinary policemen.?Material support and on-site training for the Belarusian security services demonstrates that Germany as well as other EU member states are lacking a consistent approach towards Belarus.

It is time to define clear guidelines when dealing with non-democratic states such as Belarus. It should be out of the question for Germany to support Belarusian state organs that are involved in violent crack-downs of peaceful demonstrations. Apart from ethical objections to this support, it contradicts the policy of supporting the Belarusian opposition struggling for survival in Belarus.?

It is now known that between 2008 and 2011, the German police trained around 500 policemen, border guards and other members of the security forces. Moreover, the German government equipped the Belarusian security forces with computers, uniforms and technical equipment. ?In total the equipment was worth around ?200m.? After the election day crackdown in December 2010, cooperation stopped.

The German press and many opposition politicians declare that supporting a dictatorial regime is unacceptable. The German Ministry of Internal Affairs claims that the training started during the period of opening in Belarus. At that time the Belarusian authorities had signalled readiness to take steps towards ensuring rule of law in the country.

Training for policemen is part of Germany's international cooperation programme. This also includes cooperation with non-democratic or transitional states. One example of the cooperation is the training of Afghan police officers. However, the training of Belarusian police men touches problematic points.

Police Trained On-Site in Germany

First, the training consisted not only of seminars but also involved on-site training. Several hundred Belarusian policemen were present during the passing of castor transport. Whenever nuclear waste is transported through Germany anti-nuclear activists stage protest along the railway.

This is one of the few times when the German police clash with activists. During the operation at which the Belarusian forces were present, around 500 protesters were injured by the police. This hardly gives a good example to Belarusian policemen. Without doubt, the aim of this mission was that they should learn how to proceed in a non-violent and deescalating way during rallies and demonstrations.

Moreover, the German policemen are nicknamed ?friends and helpers? and Germans highly respect the institution. Whenever clashes between police and protesters happen - as was the case during the castor transport operations - there is an outcry in the country.

Because of their history, Germans are very careful about using military units for operations inside the country. The deployment of Bundeswehr during demonstrations or even football matches is still much discussed in the parliament. Therefore the cooperation between German police and the forces of a non-democratic regime may seem very problematic.

Did Germany Send Bats to Equip Belarusian Riot Police?

German newspaper articles are not precise in their reporting, which adds to the chorus of outrage. The German Spiegel keeps writing that there was cooperation with the ?feared Belarusian militia?, using the German word miliz. Belarusian ?miliz?, however, is ordinary police, while the feared forces are the riot police. the? ?Spez Nas?. It is not clear from the articles whether the cooperation took place between militia or special forces. However, German police cooperating with something called ?militia? would lead to disapproval among Germans in any case.

Several newspapers claimed that the German government had supplied bats to the Belarusian militia. While the German government immediately rejected this, it shows that the German newspapers are heating up the discussion.

While cooperation between Belarusian state forces such as border guards and German institutions is acceptable for the Belarusian and the German opposition politicians, the support of riot police is not. The question is therefore whether the government really supported the riot police. In any case, supporting the Belarusian opposition through German political foundations and equipping the forces that crush them down at the same time will indeed raise questions.

Most likely, Germany started this training as part of a European Union programme. EU countries train and equip border guards at the EU?s external border in the interest of all EU member states. It is highly improbable that the German government decided to support the Belarusian regime in place and to enforce its capability to crush demonstrations as several articles in German press imply.

Cooperation Started During the 2008 Opening of Belarus

Only in 2012 did everybody in Germany start to notice that the opening of the regime in 2008 was not a true one.? Back then, nobody looked beyond the pretence of rapprochement by the Belarusian authorities. The German government was more than relieved to believe in opening while it was always clear to that Lukashenka had no intention of changing his policy towards democracy.

Here again it seems that the German government- along with all other EU members states- was only too happy to believe in reform. They were quick to send the German Foreign Minister, Guido Westerwelle, to Minsk. A more cautious approach to a formal rapprochement and low level cooperation could have proven more sensible.

Those people working with Belarus on a regular basis know that it is crucial for any project to bring state and non-state actors together. In Belarus, state and non-state actors live in two parallel worlds with very little interaction. It is easy to organise seminars for non-state actors and opposition politicians. However, their impact is very low and they have no power whatsoever to change things in the country. Serious change can take place when state actors start seeing democratic ideas more favourably.?

However, it is usually difficult to involve state employees - journalists, policemen, professors, politicians - to take part in training organised by Western countries. It is remarkable that the German government managed to involve so many Belarusian policemen in the seminars in the first place.

The government should realise that the debate about the police training constitutes a chance to review its policy on Belarus.

It is of course important not to stop cooperation with Belarus altogether. A completely isolated country at the Eastern border of the EU would be worse than a country that cooperates with EU institutions. It should however be clear that material support and transfer of knowledge can only be provided when they are not used against the democratic forces in the country.

The German decision makers may not be sure which security force is merely doing police work and which are the riot police beating peaceful protesters and former presidential candidates. But there are people and organisations in Belarus and in Germany who can provide them with such information.

Married To A Brand | Brand Education for Restaurants | BrandEd

Commitment seems to be something that we struggle with these days. With divorce rates continuing to climb is it really a surprise that dating and courtship has literally turned into a game? Between the popularity of The Bachelor and the Kardashian girls can you blame anyone for not taking commitment seriously?

Khloe, Kim and Kourtney Kardashian

These girls may be models but they are a far cry from a model for marriage.

When it comes to brands what do you consider a sign of commitment? Is showing patronage enough? The goal of any brand, especially a restaurant brand is to create a long lasting relationships. One that can even last a lifetime. In order for that to happen, both parties involved need to be willing to share. You know communication.?That?s kind of important when we are talking about commitment.

What kind of COMMITMENT are we talking about here??

  • A) A commitment to communicate?
  • B) A commitment to?listen?
  • C) A commitment to learn?
  • D) All of the above and more? ?
  • The answer is D, ?all of the above? and sometimes this means that you have to be willing to change. Yes, CHANGE.?
  • Sounds a lot like marriage doesn?t it?

Before we go any further, for the men out there let?s define?commitment (according to dictionary.com).

Image of a generic Marriage Certificate.

A restaurant brand isn?t asking you to sign a marriage certificate. They are just hoping for your commitment.

com?mit?ment?kuh-mit-muhnt]?noun?

1. the act of committing.

2. the state of being committed.

3. the act of committing, pledging, or engaging oneself.

4. a pledge or promise; obligation

5. engagement; involvement

Similar to marriage when we commitment to a person or a brand we expect something back in return. This can mean many different things such as attention, a promise or maybe even a guarantee. You may often hear me preach about managing expectations and the importance of not over promising and under delivering. If a customer pledges their loyalty to your restaurant brand, you better be committed to delivering on all the promises that your brand makes. When building a brand for the long haul it should be your goal to gain loyal and committed fans. Just be sure to appreciate the relationship and never take your loyal customers for granted.

Can consumers stay loyal to brands, when brands stay loyal to them?

The bigger the brand the harder this is to achieve. The reason this is usually the case is that the Executives making the decisions are far too removed from the everyday interactions with the consumers. The most successful restaurant chains that I have worked with appreciate and value the information that they can obtain from the employees. You know those who work directly with the guest everyday. Servers and managers used to be the gate keepers of customer feedback, however today that is no longer the case.

Social Media has provided a vehicle to talk directly with the consumer. This happens in real-time. Certainly a much quicker exchange of information then the old comment card, wouldn?t you say?

Tell me if you have ever heard this one before.

CEO of Company X: ?I don?t want to be active on Social Media, I mean it?s fine for my wife or kids but I don?t want to know what you ate for breakfast. And, I certainly don?t want to give my customers a place to complain.?

There are so many things to say about that comment it is hard to know where to start. But just a few retorts I like to respond with once I stop hyperventilating.

One of my favorite dishes, Uncle Julio's Carne Asada

I shot a picture of this last time I was at Uncle Julio?s. I have been committed to their Carne Asada for close to 10 years. That?s longer than most marriages.

  1. You do serve food at your restaurant, right??Are you telling me you wouldn?t want the endorsement from a customer telling their friends that they love your Carne Asada? I am sure the CEO would also hate it if that customer shared a picture on Facebook or Instagram.
  2. As for the negative comment, so what you are saying CEO is that you don?t care what your customers think? And/Or you have no interest in improving the product or service?
  3. I understand that social media is not for everyone. I am not here to tell you that you personally have to be active on Twitter or Facebook. I would certainly advise it. Your customers are active on social networks, that is all that should matter to you.?
How Do I Make This Marriage Last?

The longer the relationship the better the communication should be. VIP, Loyalty Programs, Valued Customer, Rewards, etc. Any good husband will tell you that it is their job to make their wife feel special. And, any good customer service rep should tell you the same thing.

MAKE YOUR VALUED CUSTOMER FEEL SPECIAL!

What About My Brand?

I have always believed that a brand needs to stay fluid in order to be successful, which means that your brand is constantly in a state of evolution. This doesn?t mean that you change who you are at the core. Just be accepting of change.

Silly Wedding Cartoon.

Communication is the key to any committed relationship.

A few tips:

Pay attention to trends.

Be aware of the competition.

Stay engaged with your audience.

?

Committed brands understand that they need to change.

Good brands listen to their audience. Successful brands listen?and make changes.

I guess the same advise works for successful marriages as well. Just don?t ask a Kardashian.

How do you stay committed to your customer? Are you listening and learning? Do you have a direct way to communicate with your audience? What has and has not been successful for your restaurant?

?

Gov. Quinn rejects plan to expand Ill. gambling

(AP) ? Gov. Pat Quinn on Tuesday rejected a bill to expand gambling in Illinois that would have made way for a land-based casino in Chicago, saying the proposal lacked sufficient regulatory oversight.

With his two immediate predecessors in prison, the Chicago Democrat said integrity must be a hallmark of the gambling plan, which also proposed establishing four new riverboat casinos and allowing slot machines at racetracks.

The most glaring omission from the bill "is the absence of strict ethical standards and comprehensive regulatory oversight. Illinois should never settle for a gaming bill that includes loopholes for mobsters," Quinn said in a statement announcing the veto.

He urged legislators to work with him on its shortcomings, although the bill's House sponsor said his attempts to meet with Quinn have been rebuffed. Rep. Lou Lang, D-Skokie, predicted there would be enough House votes this fall to override Quinn's veto.

At a suburban Chicago appearance late Tuesday morning, Quinn rejected that forecast.

"That veto will be sustained," he told reporters. "I think I did the right thing."

Supporters of the bill estimated the expansion could have brought in up to $1 billion a year, boost tourism and create 100,000 jobs for the state. Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel supported the establishment of a city casino. Opponents meanwhile warned of market saturation and raised concerns about the social costs.

The proposal would have established a city-owned Chicago casino with spots for 4,000 people to gamble at once. It also would have added riverboat casinos in Danville, Park City, Rockford and an undecided location in Chicago's south suburbs. Each riverboat casino would have had 1,600 gambling positions and allowed Illinois' 10 existing casinos to grow.

Quinn, who isn't opposed to gambling on principle, had said all along that he wanted a bill with stronger ethical protections. That includes barring the gambling industry from making political contributions. He said the proposal has "too many defects" for him to consider using his amendatory veto powers to change it.

"It's one thing if you had to make some technical changes here and there," Quinn said Tuesday. "This bill just falls way short of what the people of Illinois need when it comes to ethics in government."

In his veto message, Quinn took aim at the proposed Chicago casino, claiming the bill would have allowed it to play by different rules. He said the Illinois Gaming Board wouldn't have the same regulatory authority over the Chicago outlet as it holds over other casinos in the state and that the city casino would not have to follow the state's procurement code in handing out contracts.

That would leave taxpayer-financed contracts "vulnerable to organized crime, unsavory influence and potentially overpriced vendors," Quinn wrote.

In earlier responses to the governor's critique, lawmakers offered follow-up legislation to address some of the concerns. However that wouldn't be considered unless the initial law is signed, and Quinn has said he'd rather get all the legislation signed at once.

Lang said he would seek an override in the fall legislative session and dismissed the suggestion that Quinn might be open to discussing differences with the legislation's authors.

"The bottom line is he doesn't want to sign a gaming bill," Lang said. "If he had language to propose, he would have proposed it."

Quinn also criticized the legislation for providing too little support for public education. Past gambling expansions have been designed to bring in more revenue for public services such as schools, but the 1991 law that created riverboat casinos was intended to help economically depressed cities.

Harrington races out to 64 at Bethpage

FARMINGDALE, N.Y. (AP) ? Padraig Harrington found a way to take some of the attention away from Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy on Thursday. He made six birdies on the tough back nine of Bethpage Black and opened the FedEx Cup playoffs with a 7-under 64 for a one-shot lead at The Barclays.

And that surely got the attention of Ryder Cup captain Jose Maria Olazabal.

Harrington has to rely on a captain's pick to make his seventh straight European team, and that looks to be unlikely. Not only has the three-time major champion gone four years without winning against a strong field, he and Olazabal are not the best of friends after a dispute at the Seve Trophy from nine years ago.

The Irishman had the toughest time Thursday after he got off the difficult Black course. There were so many questions about the Ryder Cup, his chances of making the team and what he has to do to impress Olazabal, that at one point Harrington adopted the American way.

"The only answer I can give at this stage is I'm pleading the Fifth Amendment on that one," Harrington said. "I honestly don't know what to say. I don't want to go in there and try too desperately to beg for a pick, or I don't want to go in there and give excuses for anything. I'll just leave it be what it is. I'm just going to play golf."

That part was superb on a calm day that became increasingly warm.

It took Harrington a few holes to realize that he was back at Bethpage Black, but not at the U.S. Open. The greens were soft. The rough was deep, but not terribly dense. The pressure was not quite the same. And par wasn't going to cut it.

He came to life on the back nine with four straight birdies to cap off his 64, giving him a one-shot lead over Nick Watney and Brian Harman among the early starters. The hotter it became, the crustier the greens were, and it was unlikely anyone would catch him. No one did.

Sergio Garcia was part of the group at 66, while defending champion Dustin Johnson and Rickie Fowler, both trying to make their own impression as potential picks by U.S. captain Davis Love III, were in the group at 67.

There were 73 players from the 123-man field at par or better, not the kind of scoring associated with Bethpage Black.

Thousands of fans chased after Woods and McIlroy, in the marquee group based on their standing in the FedEx Cup ? Woods at No. 1, McIlroy at No. 3. Both of them got off to a reasonable start. Woods scrambled nicely to recover from a few errant shots and scratched out a 68. McIlroy smashed one driver after another to set up short irons into the greens, and while he had three birdies through six holes, he let the good start get away from him and settled for a 69.

If this is a rivalry, it figures to be a friendly one. Woods genuinely likes this 23-year-old from Northern Ireland, who already has two eight-shot wins in the majors. He chatted more than usual, even for a Thursday, and during one wait on the par-3 14th, McIlroy listened intently with a smile on his face as Woods told a story, then broke into a big laugh upon hearing the punch line.

Worth repeating for a family newspaper?

"No," McIlroy said with another laugh.

"He's a nice kid, he really is," Woods said. "As I said yesterday, I played with him in Abu Dhabi. We struck up a friendship back then, and it's continued. And I think it's only going to get better."

Woods won the U.S. Open at Bethpage Black in 2002, and he tied for sixth when the U.S. Open returned to this public course on Long Island in 2009. It looks the same, especially how the rough frames each fairway. And while there were differences in the softness of the greens and hole locations, the most obvious difference was scoring.

"I shot 3-under par and I'm not even in the top 10," Woods said. "So it's a little different deal."

Harrington was even par through four holes, typically not a bad score, except that he watched Troy Matteson open with a birdie on the second hole and chip in for eagle on the fourth to reach 3 under early in the round.

"It definitely helped me cross that divide between thinking I'm at a U.S. Open and level par is going to be the winning total this week," Harrington said. "This is much more of a sprint. You're going to need to be 12-under par at the end of the week, or who knows, but it ain't going to be level par."

Harrington would figure to face a different kind of pressure ? getting on the Ryder Cup team ? but he found a certain peace after realizing he couldn't earn his way onto the team after the PGA Championship. Even though Europe's team is not finalized until after this week, ranking points from The Barclays don't count.

So he's out. Unless he wins. And even that might not matter.

Olazabal said at the PGA Championship that Harrington would have to do something extraordinary to make the team. He was told of Harrington's 64 and was asked what would constitute extraordinary.

"At least a win," Olazabal said.

Olazabal and Harrington had a tense moment at the 2003 Seve Trophy when Harrington questioned the Spaniard repairing pitch marks. Olazabal felt his integrity had been questioned, conceded the hole and they had a face-to-face discussion behind the green.

Does that still linger? Might it make a difference?

"From the character that he is, I believe he would put winning way above anything that's personal," Harrington said. "The Ryder Cup means so much to Europe, particularly to Jose as a European player. Nobody ? bar Seve ? would understand in his mind what it means to Europe. Winning is what's important to him. I can't see personal coming into it to get a winning team."

Harrington then caught himself for talking about the very subject he wants to avoid. He would rather talk about his 64 at Bethpage Black, a strong effort even in soft conditions, or his chances to move up in the FedEx Cup standings and give himself a chance at the $10 million bonus prize.

"We're talking about the wrong stuff," he said. "But I'm Irish, and being brought up in Ireland, we pay a lot of attention to bookmakers and their odds. And I'm sure if I went and had a look at the odds, I would be a long shot to make the team."

YouTube Changes Business as Usual on Mobile Advertising ...

YouTube Changes Business as Usual on Mobile Advertising 300x256 YouTube Changes Business as Usual on Mobile AdvertisingVideo sharing giant YouTube has reached a significant decision with regard to its position on mobile advertising and how users are exposed to mobile ads.

On Wednesday, The New York Times reports, YouTube introduced ?a new kind of ad for its mobile site.? In short, the offering lets viewers decide whether or not to watch a particular video ad. As a result, advertisers are only charged if the ad is viewed.

This type of ad, which YouTube calls TrueView, has been available on computers since late 2010. It is well-suited for viewers using mobile devices, Google executives said, when they are often crunched for time and have little patience for unwanted interruptions.

?TrueView is really well-tuned toward small screens and the on-the-go user,? Jason Spero, a Google ad executive, tells the NYT, adding that people regularly watch the ads piped in through this user filtering platform.

?It?s a much better user experience where the user actually feels in control of their advertising in the same way they feel in control of their content,? Phil Farhi, group product manager for monetization at YouTube, contributes to the report. ?And content creators are capable of earning more money in a more user-friendly format.?

So? are you more inclined to welcome mobile ads if the ones you?re going to look at were selected by you in the first place? Please weigh in with a thought or comment below.

Employee Feedback: The Key to Change Management | Business 2 ...

employee fedbackChange is a common occurrence for every organisation, but the way change is implemented can take on many forms. If poorly managed, change can result in costly mistakes. Change management is a systematic approach to helping individuals make a smooth transition from a current state to a desired future state. Employee buy-in and participation is critical to ensuring changes made in your organisation are successful.

Organisations change and adapt in many ways, including their strategy, operations, technology and behaviour. Change can be big or small and can occur over any timeframe; it can happen instantly or may take years to implement. Regardless of the type or size of change, dealing with the perceptions of those involved can make the difference between success and failure.

So how can you improve employees? perception of change at your company?

Employee feedback should factor in every step of your change management plan. By consulting with the individuals who will be affected by the change, you can accomplish three things:

  • Improve the change process

The people on the ground doing the work often have a better understanding of day-to-day operations than managers and executives. Line workers are the experts on the small details that impact operations and processes in your company. Getting feedback from these employees can help management see beyond the big picture and avoid making costly mistakes. Given the opportunity, employees often provide their own valid suggestions and new ideas that you may not have considered.

When you invite employees to actively participate in a change process, it increases the likelihood that employees will accept the changes being made. By openly requesting feedback, you are demonstrating that you value employee input and you want to include everyone in the change process. Involvement encourages individuals to embrace change, in spite of the work it entails, because they have personal ownership.

  • Understand capability for change

Employee feedback will give you a greater understanding of the potential your organisation has for change. Sometimes, even though you believe a change needs to be made, it just isn?t feasible at the current time. By collecting and analysing employee feedback, you can gain valuable insight into strengths and weaknesses throughout your company. This information will allow you to create a realistic plan for change.

Employee feedback surveys can be a powerful tool to support change management as they solicit valuable feedback from staff, easily and effectively. Read this post for 10 tips on how to gather feedback from your employees.

Shares slip after Japan exports fall, euro steady

TOKYO (Reuters) - Asian shares slipped on Wednesday as slumping Japanese exports reminded investors of the risks the euro zone debt crisis poses to regional economies.

The euro held steady on expectations the European Central Bank will act to rein in surging borrowing costs. But a rise in the CBOE Volatility Index, a gauge of Wall Street's sensitivity to risk, and a pause in the recent run-up in U.S. Treasury yields suggested investors were yet to be convinced that Europe's three-year crisis is close to resolution.

"The recent rally in riskier assets had been built on a lull in Europe, so they are ready to face a correction when hopes for something unrealistic fade," said Takeo Okuhara, a fund manager at Daiwa SB Investments. He was referring to speculation that the ECB would buy bonds to cap the yields of troubled euro zone sovereigns.

"Economic data confirmed fundamentals are not strong, with a slowdown in China, which relies heavily on exports to Europe, having material effects elsewhere," he said.

European markets were seen falling, with financial spreadbetters calling London's FTSE 100, Paris's CAC-40 and Frankfurt's DAX to open down as much as 0.8 percent.

MSCI's broadest index of Asia-Pacific shares outside Japan fell 0.5 percent, led by sharp declines in the energy and materials sectors.

Japan's Nikkei stock average dipped 0.3 percent as investors cashed in gains from a sharp run-up on mounting hopes for ECB action, just as U.S. stocks fell on Tuesday after the Standard & Poor's 500 index hit a four-year high.

Japan's exports fell an annual 8.1 percent in July, the deepest drop in six months, dragged down by collapsing shipments to Europe and a sharp fall in sales to China. The fragile report from the world's third-biggest economy followed similarly bleak data from export-reliant South Korea and Taiwan.

Oil traded in ranges, capped by growth worries but supported by ECB hopes. Brent was up 0.1 percent to $114.77 a barrel and U.S. crude also inched up 0.1 percent to $96.94. Copper was down 0.2 percent to $7,595 a tonne ahead of earnings from top global miner BHP Billiton, which may put three mega projects on hold on Wednesday when it will likely report its first annual profit fall in three years.

BHP will wrap up a torrid earnings season for the world's biggest miners, all battered by weaker prices for iron ore, copper, coal, nickel and aluminium as economic growth in big-buyer China slows to its weakest pace in a decade.

Also limiting the downside is some view that Asian equities are not yet overbought. Flows of foreign capital remain important direction-setters for many Asian markets.

Net foreign buying stood at $8.1 billion so far in August, Credit Suisse said in a research note, below an overbought level.

Such purchases on a rolling 12-month basis is 0.6 percent of market capitalisation, below the 1 percent level seen overbought, Credit Suisse said, while net foreign buying over two months stands at 0.26 percent, less than the 0.6 percent or more seen as overheated.

ECB SPECULATION DIES HARD

Speculation that the ECB will take a decisive step to cut borrowing costs for Spain and Italy gained further momentum with an article in London's Daily Telegraph, that said the ECB was examining plans to put a hard cap on Spanish and Italian yields.

A similar report in German media was on Monday denied by the bank, which repeated its stance in response to the latest British report.

Meanwhile, German Chancellor Angela Merkel voiced support for the ECB's crisis-fighting strategy last week.

Greek Prime Minister Antonis Samaras is holding bilateral talks with leaders of France, Germany and the Eurogroup this week to seek concessions for its austerity-to-bailout swap.

"The market rallied on growing convictions that Germany stands ready to do more to keep the euro zone united. Merkel's government seems more willing to ease the official debt burden on Greece, as long as the basic elements of the second bailout programme remain," Barclays Capital said in a research note.

Spain's 10-year debt yields have shed about 8 percent this month on growing hopes for concrete action.

The euro traded at $1.2466, not far from $1.2488 hit on Tuesday, its highest since July 5.

Spot gold steadied around $1,638.66 an ounce, near a 3-1/2 month high of $1,641.20 touched on Tuesday.

Asian credit markets were weaker, pushing the spread on the iTraxx Asia ex-Japan investment-grade index by two basis points.
