Josh Childress Narrows Interest To Three NBA Teams

Free agent forward Josh Childress is receiving strong interest from three teams on a potential veteran?s minimum deal, a league source told RealGM.

Childress has focused his career on the NBA, and he rejected a lucrative offer from Olympiacos this offseason for an opportunity to stay in the league, a source said.

At 6-foot-8, Childress established himself as an active defender and slasher in four years with the Atlanta Hawks, but he averaged just one point in 14 games for the Brooklyn Nets last season. The Philadelphia 76ers and Sacramento Kings are known as firm suitors for wing free agents.

Childress, 30, has averaged 9.2 points and 4.8 rebounds over seven NBA seasons.

Pope Francis enthralls his young fans: 'I hope he hugs me!'

Mario Tama / Getty Images

People watch a video screen as Pope Francis celebrates Mass on Copacabana Beach on Thursday in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. More than 1.5 million pilgrims are expected to join the pontiff for his visit to the Catholic Church's World Youth Day celebrations.

By Claudio Lavanga, Correspondent, NBC News

RIO DE JANEIRO, Brazil ? They have come in the hundreds of thousands, braving the rain and cold, from all corners of the earth, to meet the man they say strengthened their faith, and gave them hope for a better future.

An estimated one million young pilgrims from 180 countries packed Rio?s iconic Copacabana beach for Pope Francis? welcoming rally and mass on Thursday, turning World Youth Day into a carnival of faith.

The army of young people packed Rio?s Avenida Atlantica, Copacabana?s ocean drive, waving flags from all over the world and shouting chants of ?Viva o Papa.?

They are the new ?missionaries? for the 76-year-old Argentine pontiff who wants them to ?Go and make disciples of all nations,? the theme of this year?s World Youth Day. A call many of them have taken seriously.

?I am here with a group from New York,? Eva Garrea, a New Yorker of Peruvian descent said on the beach Thursday. ?We are all from different cultures and backgrounds, and yet we are united in our faith. This is a message we can bring to everybody.?

Organizers say more than 400,000 pilgrims and volunteers registered to attend the World Youth Day events, but the estimates of actual crowd numbers at his big events are much higher. In addition, there are also 15,000 priests ? and 6,000 journalists to cover all the excitement.

Hundreds of young Catholics from all over the United States watched the pope?s ceremony from the wet sand, waving American flags and joining in chants of ?Bienvenido,? Portuguese for ?Welcome.?

Mark Jones, a 20-year-old from Florida, reveled in the atmosphere of solidarity among the catholic youth in Rio. ?I think this pope is absolutely what we need right now, it?s a beautiful example of the simplicity and truth that?s present in the Catholic faith,? he said. ?I could not have hoped for a better pope.? ?

Aside from being a celebration of faith, World Youth Day is a jamboree for young people, a weeklong festival of prayers and colorful events. No wonder it has often been called the ?Catholic Woodstock.?

Carlos Zone, from Naples, Fla., traveled to Rio with family and friends. ?It doesn?t get better than this, being here together. And on top of it: The pope is here!? he laughed. ?I hope he hugs me! Or a member of my family. I?d love that!?

Luca Zennaro / AP

The pontiff is making his first visit overseas since he was elected in March. An estimated 2 million people are expected to greet him.

Zone?s wish is not so far-fetched. Since his election in March, Pope Francis brought back a hands-on and personable approach to the faithful that has not been seen since the heyday of Pope John Paul II, to the point that he?s earned the nickname of the ?People?s Pope.?

?We are all fans of the pope, we love Pope Francis!? Robert Duarte, a 26-year-old man from Los Angeles, said. ?He is a pope for all people, both rich and poor, everyone.?

The wave of people from all over the world that flooded the beach of Copacabana, joining hands, sharing chants and dancing on the sand long after the pope left the party, proved Duarte right.

Groups of Catholics carried their national flags like diplomats on a foreign mission. Young pilgrims descended to Rio all the way from Italy, Norway, St. Lucia and even China.

?I took a 28 hours flight to get here, but it?s worth it,? said Fu Jawen, a 29-year-old from Shanghai. ??

Miriam Manzaes, a young woman from Barcelona, said seeing the pope ?was amazing.? Adding, ?I can't explain it with words?I was almost crying.?

And an estimated 30,000 young people from Francis? native Argentina joined the crowd, too.? The pope even added a last-minute visit with them to his already busy schedule at Rio?s cathedral on Thursday.

Fiorenzia de Mattei, a 23-year-old from Buenos Aires, feels a connection to his fellow Argentine. ?We are friendly, cheerful, happy, we show that, and the pope is one of us, like us. That?s the greatest thing about Francis: He is one of the people.?

On a stall nearby, merchandising and souvenirs were selling out fast. Among them, a T-shirt said: ?Keep Calm and Make Disciples.? What was meant to be an ironic slogan could well become the real theme of this year?s World Youth Day.

Honey Boo Boo's sis tackles 4-pound sandwich

TV

Alana "Honey Boo Boo" Thompson may be the star of TLC's "Here Comes Honey Boo Boo" (though some would argue the real star is the always-quotable Mama June), but on the next episode, it's her big sister who's hungry for the spotlight.

In a sneak peek, Lauryn, better known to viewers as "Pumpkin," can be seen preparing to take on Pigzilla ? a monster pork sandwich.

"Pigzilla has been challenged 55 times, and it was only defeated once, by a professional eater," Mama June explained in the clip. "I think it's going to be defeated twice, because hey, I've got my own professional eater on my hands."

Pumpkin, the first female to take on the challenge, has her work cut out for her.

"Pigzilla is a four-pound sandwich ? three pounds meat, one pound bun," June said, adding, "We're going to see which beast wins."

But there's another "beast" eager to join the battle. When the family arrived at Papa Buck's restaurant, Honey Boo Boo's dad, Sugar Bear, ordered himself a 'zilla too ? just to inspire the competitive spirit in Pumpkin.

Not that she needed inspiring. Before sitting down to the feast, Pumpkin planned out her attack.

"I'm going to eat the bun with water," she said, copying a strategy used by many competitive hot dog eaters.

But Mama June cared only about the techniques used by one pro, the legendary Takeru Kobayashi, who holds multiple speed and quantity records for eating.

"I mean, you could be the redneck Kobayashi ... if you freakin' listen to me!" June shot.

So how did Pumpkin fare with Pigzilla? The answer will be revealed on Wednesday night's episode of "Here Comes Honey Boo Boo," but Papa Buck's website offers a potential spoiler.

According the site, 58 have now taken the challenge and still, only one bested the beast.

Jailed Russian female punk rock member loses parole appeal

PERM, Russia (Reuters) - A member of Russian female punk group Pussy Riot lost her appeal for parole on Wednesday after nearly a year in prison for performing a protest song against President Vladimir Putin in a Moscow cathedral.

Maria Alyokhina's appeal against a previous decision to deny her early release from a two-year jail sentence was rejected by a court in the city of Perm, where she is serving her sentence, about 1,500 km (940 miles) east of Moscow.

Alyokhina, 25, and two other Pussy Riot members were convicted of hooliganism motivated by religious hatred in August for bursting into the Russian Orthodox cathedral and belting out a "punk prayer" asking the Virgin Mary to rid Russia of Putin.

Madonna, Paul McCartney and Adele were among more than 100 musicians to sign a letter calling for their release that was published by Amnesty International on Tuesday.

The rights watchdog said Wednesday's ruling was "a further confirmation that the Russian authorities are uncompromising in their suppression of freedom of expression".

The case is seen as part of a wider crackdown on protests since Putin returned to the Kremlin for a third term in 2012.

Alyokhina and Nadezhda Tolokonnikova, 23, are due for release in March. Both mothers of five-year-olds were denied pleas for a deferred sentence until their children are older.

A third member of the feminist group, Yekaterina Samutsevich, was freed last October when a judge suspended her sentence on appeal.

Man Arrested For Facebook Post About George Zimmerman Verdict

A New York man was arrested for making a terroristic threat after he posted a Facebook status about the George Zimmerman verdict. "Kill all whites," the post read, in part.

Remel Newson, a 20-year-old Queens, N.Y., man, was angry after a jury in Sanford, Fla., on July 13 found Zimmerman not guilty in the shooting death of Trayvon Martin, an unarmed black teenager. Newson took to Facebook to air his grievances, posting a status update about how blacks cannot get justice, according to WNYC. He used the hashtag "#killall whites" and wrote, "let's kill cops nd neighborhood watcher [sic]."

Read the full post below (via Gothamist):

BLAC N****S CNT GET NO TYPE OF JUSTICE FUCCIN WIT DESE CRACCER'S #KILLALL WHITES DATS DA TYPE OF S**T I'M ON F**K DIS BEEF S**T LET'S KILL COPS ND NEIGHBO RHOOD WATCHER #FACTS DAT

A New York Police Department officer monitoring Facebook saw the post on July 17. Hours later, the Queens man was arrested for ?making a terroristic threat," a felony, according to WNYC. He was later charged with unlawful possession of marijuana.

Following the arrest, Newson admitted to police he "f**ked up" and made a "stupid mistake," according to DNAinfo New York. However, his lawyer, Tasha Lloyd-Garcia, claims her client copied and pasted the "terroristic" post from another person's profile onto his. She is "disturbed" over how the NYPD obtained a search warrant based solely off the posts.

"It doesn't seem like it would meet the standard for probable cause to get a search warrant," she told DNAinfo. "There's no common scheme or plans to carry anything out."

Arrests over Facebook posts are not unheard of. In February, Texas teen Justin Carter was jailed after he made a sarcastic threat in a Facebook comment to "shoot up a school full of kids and eat their ... hearts" while arguing with a friend over a video game. A woman from Canada saw the post and alerted authorities. Carter was taken into custody and charged with making a terroristic threat. On July 11, he was freed on $500,000 bail after nearly six months in jail.

Brisbane: the world's most most expensive city for business travel ...

Brisbane is the?most expensive city in the world for business travellers, with?Sydney and Perth also in the top five.

The Aussie trio outstrip London, New York, Paris and Zurich, according to a worldwide report by corporate travel?and expense management firm Concur.

With Brisbane "still in the midst of the mining-related construction boom, accommodation costs have contributed significantly to its position at the top of the list" observes?Michael Eberhard, Concur executive vice president and general manager APAC.

"These increases are influenced by the influx of Fly In, Fly Out workers to the city, and the growing importance of corporate hospitality to the Queensland economy.?

Concur's Expense IQ?report says that Brisbane hotels cost A$331 per night on average, in comparison with A$211 in New York.

However, Melbournians can't afford an indulgent smile: the Victorian capital snared seventh place in the top ten, based on Concur's analysis of more than US$50 billion in its clients' corporate travel and entertainment spend.

"With the Australian dollar continuing to suffer, corporate travellers are having to not only contend with poor exchange rates, but also significantly higher dining and entertainment costs" Concur advises.

Sydney is rated the world's most expensive city for dining, with Concur reporting an average dining spend of $76 per person ? that's $22 more than Paris and?$19 more than London.

London, Shanghai, Singapore, Beijing and Tokyo remain the world's top destinations outside of the USA for business travellers, with US-bound flyers heading to?New York, Las Vegas, Chicago, San Francisco and Houston.

Apple: dev portal breach hasn?t compromised iTunes accounts or credit cards

dev center down

You?re probably aware by now?Apple?s portal for its registered developers has been down since?noon on Thursday, July 18. The firm on Sunday updated the standard ?we?ll be back soon? message at the service?s landing page to warn the ?maintenance will take longer than expected?.

Adding fuel to fire, Apple soon after emailed developers with details on what they revealed as a nasty security breach that may have left some private information exposed.?Unfortunately, the company stopped short of detailing precisely what information might have been compromised and how.

Be that as it may, the seeming privacy scare has left many scratching their head over the potential unpleasantries?that might transpire next. Apple on its part did confirm the breach won?t affect consumer iTunes account and said no credit card data had been compromised?

In a follow-up article over at TechCrunch, writer Grek Kumparak had reached out to Apple and was able to confirm that:

? The hack only affected developer accounts; standard iTunes accounts were not compromised
? Credit card data was not compromised
? They waited three days to alert developers because they were trying to figure out exactly what data was exposed
? There is no time table yet for when the Dev Center will return

Following the breach, researcher Ibrahim Balic stepped forward to explain he had actually reported 13 bugs plaguing the system to Apple, ?one by one??four hours before it took down the website, making him the primary suspect for hacking the Dev Center.

That Twitter lit up with reports of unauthorized password resets some developers had received won?t play to his favor.

?I gave details to Apple as much as I can and I?ve also added screenshots,? Balic said?in a video embedded above. One of the bugs enabled him to take?users details of 73 Apple Inc. employees so he provided this evidence to Apple as well.

?Four hours later from my final report, Apple developer portal gas closed down and you know it still is,? he said. All told, Balic holds 100,000+ users details, though he said he had informed Apple about this.?But the young London-based security researcher is unnerved.

?In some of the media news I watch/read that whether legal authorities were involved in its investigation of the hack,? he wrote.

Unsure about the potential legal implications of the breach, he underscores he hasn?t pulled the prank on Apple??to harm or damage?. Instead, his aim?was to ?report bugs? and collect the data for the purpose of seeing ?how deep I can go within this scope?.

A notice on the dev portal acknowledges that ?an intruder attempted to secure personal information of our registered developers?.?Although Apple assured encrypted personal information cannot be accessed, ?in the spirit of transparency??the company cautioned that some developers? names, mailing addresses, and/or email addresses ?may have been accessed?.

dev comment

Although Apple has been ?working around the clock? since Thursday, at post time on Monday morning the website was unavailable.

The iPhone maker also promised to extend the program membership to the affected developers. ?Your app will remain on the App Store,? the website notice assures.

The now five-day outage couldn?t have come at a worst time.

Developers are in the middle of a major transition as they test their warez against beta builds of iOS 7. Apple?s Dev Center provides access not only to the documentation and knowledge base, it also acts as the central repository for the web tools developers use to sign their code, upload apps to iTunes, manage their account and iAds and more.

The blunder has prompted the company to promise to completely overhaul the portal, update its server software and rebuilding the entire database, which is likely going to take some time.

We?re hoping it goes live later today because a new iOS 7 beta is due soon.

Japan upper house vote to set ruling bloc's power

TOKYO (AP) ? Japanese voters are chosing lawmakers for the upper house of parliament in an election expected to give Prime Minister Shinzo Abe's ruling coalition a strong mandate.

A victory Sunday would give Abe's Liberal Democratic Party and partner New Komeito control of both chambers of parliament ? an elusive goal for the government in recent years.

That would make it easier for Abe to deliver on reforms needed to cope with a rapidly graying population and bulging national debt. It also might give him the power to push through his party's nationalist agenda.

Abe says his first priority is sustaining a nascent economic recovery. Since taking office after the Liberal Democrats won a lower house election in December, the ailing economy has improved under aggressive monetary and fiscal stimulus.

NH Union Leader | The IRS & Holder: Looking the other way

At the request of Sen. Chuck Grassley, R-Iowa, the inspector general confirmed that his office had found four cases of ?unauthorized access or disclosure of tax records of political donors or candidates? by federal employees. One of those breaches was described as ?willful,? and referred to the Department of Justice. There was, of course, no prosecution.

If you appear to be violating federal law in a way that would benefit President Obama politically, don?t worry. Eric Holder?s Justice Department will look the other way. Whether you are a member of the New Black Panther Party intimidating voters at a polling place, a ?green energy? company killing protected species with wind turbines or an IRS employee harassing Tea Party groups or accessing private tax information, you?re good. Air Force drone crash closes remote Florida highway

An Air Force drone being tested at a nearby base crashed on takeoff Wednesday near a remote stretch of a Florida Panhandle highway. Officials say no one was injured but the road would be closed into Wednesday night.

The Air Force closed Highway 98 west of Panama City and east of Mexico Beach because of possible fires from the crash. Officials said the drone has a limited, 24-hour battery life and would be inactive after the battery depleted.

According to an Air Force fact sheet, the QF-4 is tested at nearby Tyndall Air Force Base and at Holloman Air Force Base in New Mexico. The plane is a modified F-4 Phantom aircraft, which has been in use since the 1950s.

Public information officials at Tyndall released a brief statement about the crash and declined to answer specific questions about the drone or the reason for the crash.

James Lewis is a military technology expert with the Center for Strategic and International Studies in Washington and said the QF-4 was likely used for target practice by Tyndall's F-22 Raptor pilots.

"It is an older fighter plane they have modified for use as a target," Lewis said. "The QF-4 is not a drone in the way we normally think of drones. It is not used for anything other than to be shot down. It is an old aircraft that would otherwise be sold for scrap."

The Air Force fact sheet said the plane is controlled remotely, simulates enemy aircraft maneuvers and missiles are fired at it. An explosive device in the plane destroys it if it becomes uncontrollable, the fact sheet said.

Highway 98 hugs the Gulf Coast and is a popular route for tourists looking for scenic drive from Panama City to Florida's Big Bend region.

Apple, Google, Facebook, Microsoft, Twitter and Others Call for More NSA Transparency

NSA-Logomag380Apple, Google, Facebook, Microsoft are part of a broad alliance of technology companies and civil liberties groups that will tomorrow demand dramatically increased transparency around U.S. government surveillance efforts.

In a letter to be published Thursday, the alliance ? whose members include 63 companies, investors, non-profits and trade organizations ? will call upon President Obama and congressional leaders to allow Internet, telephone, and Web-based service providers to report national security-related requests for information with greater specificity. Specifically, they ask that they are allowed to regularly report:

? The number of government requests for information about their users
? The number of individuals, accounts, or devices for which information was requested
? The number of requests that sought communications content, basic subscriber information, and/or other information.

The coalition also asks that the government begin issuing a transparency report of its own that provides essentially the same information ? the total number of information requests made and the number of individuals affected by each.

?Basic information about how the government uses its various law enforcement?related investigative authorities has been published for years without any apparent disruption to criminal investigations,? a copy of the letter obtained by AllThingsD reads. ?We seek permission for the same information to be made available regarding the government?s national security?related authorities. ? Just as the United States has long been an innovator when it comes to the Internet and products and services that rely upon the Internet, so too should it be an innovator when it comes to creating mechanisms to ensure that government is transparent, accountable, and respectful of civil liberties and human rights.?

The letter is perhaps the loudest call yet for greater government disclosure of digital communications monitoring following revelations of a sweeping surveillance program led by the U.S. National Security Agency. Certainly, it?s the most cohesive. It?s signatories are a phalanx of tech companies and civil liberties groups. Here?s a quick sampling:

AOL, Apple, Digg, Dropbox, Evoca, Facebook, Google, Heyzap, LinkedIn, Meetup, Microsoft, Mozilla, Reddit, salesforce.com, Tumblr, Twitter, Yahoo, YouNow, Union Square Ventures, Y Combinator, Public Knowledge, Reporters Without Borders, The Wikimedia Foundation.

EU says Google not doing enough in antitrust case

PARIS (AP) ? The European Union's competition chief says Google isn't doing enough to overcome concerns that it's stifling competition, and ordered the Internet giant to come up with new ideas.

The European Commission, the EU's executive arm, has been investigating for three years whether Google Inc. is abusing its 90 percent market share in Internet searches in Europe to favor its own services. Google has sought to address the concerns mainly by changing how it displays search results.

EU Competition Commissioner Joaquin Almunia said Wednesday that after hearing from other companies and organizations, "I concluded that proposals that Google sent to us months ago are not enough to overcome our concerns."

He said he sent a letter to Google Executive Chairman Eric Schmidt "asking Google to present better proposals."

In response, Google spokesman Al Verney said says its proposal "clearly addresses" the four areas of concern laid out by EU authorities. "We continue to work with the commission to settle this case," he said.

In addition to Google's dominance of Internet searches in Europe, the Commission has also expressed concern about how Google manages the ads appearing next to its search results, how Google displays content from other websites and how its actions affect advertising on rival networks.

Both sides say they are committed to reaching a settlement. Without one, the Commission could formally file a case against Google, leading to a lengthy process that could result in fines worth 10 percent of Google's annual revenue.

The European Commission has often taken a harder line with U.S. tech companies than its American counterparts, the Federal Trade Commission and the Justice Department. Google settled a similar antitrust complaint on its search business with the FTC in January without making any major concessions on how it runs its search engine.

I used to have a yoga ball instead of a chair (but the ball got a flat), and boy did I feel it in my core! I spend a few hours in front of the computer every day, and those core muscles got their workout, let me tell you, Now, I'm not capable to just sit still on a ball like that, I was constantly 'rolling around' on a small scale, a few cm this way, a few cm that way and I guess that helped a lot too. Still, I think you could get one of those balls for 5-10 bucks at wahlmart or something, it might be worth the investment. There are a multitude of youtube vids available for free that will teach you various back-strenghtening excercises too.
Other than that, anything that works your core will help.

Also, try to move around a little at your station instead of standing stock-still (shift your weight between your feet, take a babystep toward/away from your station, shimmey your hips, whatever, just keep your circulation going), and take frequent, short breaks (maybe even just 15-30sec or so) to strech out your back every 10-20 min, and start doing that from the moment you start your shift, not when you are starting to feel the strain.

Oh, and make sure that your shoes are not only comfortable, but gives you the best type of support and cushioning thet you need. In my country you can go to certain sports stores and they will liik ar your feet and gait and stuff like that and they can help you. Of course if you already know you don't have 'perfect feet', go see an orthopedic person who can help you.

Back trouble often requires core strengthening before improving.
Try these:

1. Glute Bridge With Marching

Why: This exercise will improve hip strength and increase pelvic and lumbar stability.

How To:
Lie on your back with your knees bent and feet flat on the floor. Slightly brace your abs and lift your hips off the ground. Squeeze your butt to form a straight line from your knees to your shoulders. Without moving your body, lift one foot off the ground. Return it to the ground and switch legs. Alternate sides for 60 seconds and repeat for three sets

2. Offset Reverse Lunge

Why: This exercise will increase lower body strength and improve balance, coordination and pelvic and core stability.

How to:
Hold a weight in your right hand and stand with your feet hip width apart. Take a large step backward with your right leg. Go into a lunge. Return to the starting position by stepping forward and upward with your left leg. Perform 8-12 repetitions and switch sides. Perform 2-3 sets

I had problems with my back to, specially with muscles that are rsponsible for pushing back your shoulders and moving the backside of the shoulder bones. Sadly training them is a bit hard, because with normal gymnastics you hardly can find any exercises training them. I went into gym, but couldnt stand the "vibrations" there. A cool and really cheap solution I have found is a "Theraband", a type of elastic cord, I bought second hand on the internet. It really helps you training that muscles easily, as example by stepping on that bend and lifting it from behind with straight arms, or you fix the band somewhere in shoulderhigh behind you, grab the ends and then move your arms forward and so on. Second hand theraband costed me less then 10 EUR, so much cheaper then the gym, and much less weird people. ^^
