Her-icanes ready for Bantam Baseball Championships

For the first time in the history of B.C. Minor baseball an all-girls team, the Her-icanes, will be representing Aldergrove as one of the co-hosts of the Provincial Tournament.

The U-15 girls will be facing the other 11 all-boys teams for the title of B.C.'s Bantam A champions. Co-hosted by the Aldergrove Dodgers and the Her-icanes, the tournament takes place at Aldergrove Athletic Park, July 31 to August 4 (or August 5 in event of rained-out games).

Wayne Bampton, the general manager of the Aldergrove Peewee and Bantam girls teams, as well as the Okanagan Halos, says the girls baseball program has come a long way since it started five years ago.

The U-15 Her-icanes are also the B.C. Select team that is going to the National Championships in Halifax, August 22. The team's players are from Kelowna, Vancouver Island, Chilliwack and Abbotsford.

The Her-icanes are scheduled to play the Aldergrove Dodgers in the Bantam A Provincial Tournament here on Saturday, August 3 at 3 p.m.

The U-13 Her-icanes are Peewees and feature a pair of sisters from Aldergrove. They are the B.C. Select team which will be going to the Girls Western Championships in Redcliff, Alberta, August 8-12 (the original hosts, Medicine Hat had to cancel due to heavy rains).

Bampton says, "A couple of weeks ago the Blue Jays Academy came to Nat Bailey Stadium for Girls Day, one of four Canadian cities to have such an honour. Most of the Her-icanes were in attendance ? the story behind this all-girls team in the Provincials is newsworthy - our U-13 team and the Okanagan team (Halos) are going to Alberta for the Girls Western Championships."

Iran, U.S. signal will to engage as new president sworn in

By Yeganeh Torbati and Marcus George

DUBAI (Reuters) - Iran and the United States signaled a fresh will on Sunday to seek to end the dispute over Tehran's nuclear program after Hassan Rouhani was sworn in as president and called for dialogue to reduce "antagonism and aggression".

Hopes for a diplomatic resolution increased with Rouhani's win over conservative rivals in June, when voters replaced hardliner Mahmoud Ahmadinejad with a cleric whose watchword is "moderation" but who is still very much an Islamic Republic insider.

"The only way for interaction with Iran is dialogue on an equal footing, confidence-building and mutual respect as well as reducing antagonism and aggression," Rouhani told parliament after taking his oath of office.

"If you want the right response, don't speak with Iran in the language of sanctions, speak in the language of respect," he said.

Within hours, the United States said it was ready to work with Rouhani's government if it were serious about engagement.

"The inauguration of President Rouhani presents an opportunity for Iran to act quickly to resolve the international community's deep concerns over Iran's nuclear program," White House spokesman Jay Carney said in a statement.

"Should this new government choose to engage substantively and seriously to meet its international obligations and find a peaceful solution to this issue, it will find a willing partner in the United States."

Iran's critics say it has used previous nuclear negotiations as a delaying tactic while continuing to develop nuclear weapons-related technology - something Tehran denies.

Signaling both his wish to get straight down to work and a likely willingness to engage with the United States, Rouhani immediately presented a list of cabinet nominees to the parliament speaker that included Iran's former ambassador to the United Nations, Mohammad Javad Zarif, as foreign minister.

Parliament must approve the proposed ministers before they can take office and the speaker said the assembly would review the nominees in the next week.

Zarif is a respected diplomat involved in negotiations with the United States since the 1980s and well known to top U.S. officials including Vice President Joe Biden and Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel.

"GULF OF MISPERCEPTIONS"

Western envoys familiar with Zarif have said his appointment may be a sign of Rouhani's interest in breaking the deadlock with the United States.

Ali Vaez, Iran analyst at the International Crisis Group, said Zarif had unique skills that "allow him to bridge the great gulf of misperceptions between Iran and the West."

"No one else is better suited to take on the grim but grand task of ending Iran's isolation at this time of national peril," he told Reuters.

Any new overtures to the West would have to be approved by Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who has maintained a staunchly anti-Western stance since becoming Iran's supreme leader in 1989.

After eight years of Ahmadinejad's confrontational government, under which the West tightened sanctions making daily life tougher for normal Iranians, Khamenei is likely to give Rouhani a chance to resolve the issue, but has publicly expressed more skepticism of the chances of a solution.

Though less hard line than his predecessor, Rouhani has held important military and security posts since the Islamic revolution of 1979. He was head of the Supreme National Security Council for 16 years and one of two personal representatives of Khamenei on the same body for another eight years.

Rouhani did not name a candidate to head the Supreme National Security Council. The person occupying that position is usually also Iran's chief negotiator in its talks with world powers over its nuclear program.

Iranian news agencies last month said Rouhani would nominate Mohammad Forouzandeh, a former Revolutionary Guard, defense minister and member of Iran's Security Council, for the post.

Moto X preview: A Google phone assembled with you, the user, in mind

Moto X preview A Google phone assembled with you, the user, in mind

Motorola. A Google company. It's time to commit that to memory. With the Moto X, a 4.7-inch phone going on sale later this summer for $199 on contract, the company has officially started the shot clock for the "new Motorola"; this is the first Moto product designed from scratch with Google's direct oversight. And it shows, from the packaging to the messaging to the features aimed at mainstream users. Most importantly of all, there's Moto X's standout feature: personalization. We've been hearing for years from various OEMs that smartphones are a personal statement, a reflection of the individual, but aside from the occasional color option, the wallpaper and case have been the only real opportunities for personal expression. Well, you can kiss those days goodbye. Motorola's keyed in to a core part of the user experience -- self-styling -- and we expect its rivals to follow suit.

But all of that backstory can wait. We need to talk about the Moto X. The company never explicitly said so when it showed us the phone behind closed doors today, but this is clearly a mainstream phone (it's geared towards the "majority of users" several execs told us). To that point, its spec sheet and feature list (Touchless Control, Active Display, Quick Capture) won't dazzle the technorati. And, from what we can tell, it's not supposed to. To hear the company tell it, the Moto X's journey began one year ago with a whiteboard listing all of the most common user problems, ways to address those issues and a plan to get the device into as many hands as possible. You won't be able to assess that for yourself until the phone launches on AT&T, Verizon, T-Mobile, Sprint and US Cellular later this summer. For now, though, if our initial hands-on time is any indication, it appears Motorola's succeeded.

Want to Stay in Shape After 60? Get Started Here! - Sixty and Me

    Margaret Manning

Women over 60 are challenging stereotypes and creating a new definition of aging. We are finding new ways to stay healthy ? in mind, body, and spirit. Getting older used to mean inevitable physical weakness and mental decline. However, new research shows that women can stay healthy and get stronger and mentally sharp as they get older.

Whether you have specific goals to increase your physical stamina and mental clarity or just want to be more active and able to live life with energy and verve, here are some ideas for staying in shape.

    Make it Fun

Fitness shouldn?t be a chore. Instead it should be a part of your day that you look forward to, something that you love to do. Whether you want to take a yoga class, run with a friend, or start a new sport that you?ve never tried before, the key to a successful fitness routine is that is it does not become ?routine.? If you?re energized and excited by integrating new things into your exercise activities, you?ll be more likely to keep doing them.

    Make it Social

For women over 60 living alone, there are more ways than ever to stay connected to the people you care about. Keeping physically fit can be a ?social? activity as well. Instead of getting together with friends to eat a high-calorie dinner and drink alcohol, why not look for occasions where you can meet friends to enjoy active outdoor activities like hiking, biking or walking. Making exercise into a social activity and having shared goals will motivate you to set goals and keep moving ? more frequently and purposefully than you might have done on your own.

    Make it an Adventure

Staying in shape does not have to be an everyday ?routine? done only at the gym in the city where you live. Staying in shape can reflect your overall spirit of adventure. Do you love to travel and do yoga? Go on a yoga tour. Do you love to run, well what about taking part in a special ?fun run? that is more than just a race? Sign up for a special themed 5K run like the ?Color Run? or the ?Electric Run,? a high-energy 5K run enhanced with music and a light show.

    Keep Eating Healthy

Exercise is complemented by a healthy diet and by adding a variety of healthy supplements to your routine. Making sure sensible balanced eating is part of your overall diet and taking your vitamins is not just important for children, it?s important for women over 60 as well.

    Stay Positive

As discussed in this article about the importance of positive thinking, looking on the ?bright side? can help women over 60 get more exercise! Studies have shown that older adults are more likely to keep going to the gym if they have an overall positive attitude toward life and toward physical activity. Creating a fitness plan that makes you feel good (and keeps you feeling motivated to go back) is a virtuous cycle ? the better you feel, the easier it is to be positive, and the more positive you feel, the easier it is to keep staying active and strong!

What is your favorite way to stay in shape? What is surprising for you about exercising and doing sports after age 60, compared to other stages of life?

    Sarah Harrison, Snowden's WikiLeaks 'adviser'

LONDON (AP) -- The whole time Edward Snowden has been seeking asylum, WikiLeaks staffer Sarah Harrison has been by his side.

She has emerged as a central, if mysterious, figure in the saga that has taken Snowden across the world in an attempt to evade U.S. espionage charges. Harrison rose from intern to one of WikiLeaks' founder Julian Assange's most trusted lieutenants in just a few years, but she has earned an even higher profile as Snowden's guide and adviser.

WikiLeaks says she traveled with the former NSA systems analyst from Hong Kong to Moscow. She appeared next to Snowden at a meeting with activists at the Moscow airport where he was stranded in hiding for weeks. She even slipped out of the airport in a taxi with him after Russia granted him asylum Thursday, according to the group.

WikiLeaks has otherwise not revealed much about her. But what is clear is that she has become indispensable to the organization.

It has described her as Snowden's legal adviser. While she does not appear to have a law degree, her bio on the Wikileaks websites lists Harrison as a "U.K. citizen, journalist and legal researcher." Media reports put her age at 31.

While interning at the Center of Investigative Journalism, based at London's City University, she helped WikiLeaks' founder Julian Assange with the organization's disclosure of secret U.S. military records, according to the group's website. Harrison went on to join the Bureau of Investigative Journalism in August 2010, working as a researcher at the British not-for-profit that supports investigative journalism.

There she worked on the team handling a series of Iraq War files released by WikiLeaks to several major media organizations ?before moving into WikiLeaks itself in October 2010. Since then, she has maintained a constant, but mostly silent, presence at Assange's side.

She was with him at the English country manor where he lived under house arrest while resisting extradition to Sweden on sex-related allegations. She was also with him at his court appearances. She was also among those who forked over funds for his bail, money they lost when he sought refuge in the Ecuadorean Embassy in violation of his bail conditions.

But with Assange holed up in the embassy, Harrison has taken on a more public role with the organization.

She appeared at London's Frontline Club last year to announce that WikiLeaks was in the process of publishing material from 2.4 million Syrian emails, many of which it said came from official government accounts. In that appearance, she acknowledged that WikiLeaks was facing "a difficult time at the moment" but said "we are continuing to work through that."

On Thursday, WikiLeaks announced that Snowden had left the Moscow airport ? under Harrison's care. Rarely seen publicly in their weeks hiding out at the Sheremetyevo airport transit zone, that appears unlikely to change now that they have taken a taxi to somewhere in Russia.

"Harrison has remained with Mr. Snowden at all times to protect his safety and security, including during his exit from Hong Kong," WikiLeaks said in a statement. "They departed from the airport together in a taxi and are headed to a secure, confidential place."
