Missy Franklin: The 'Female Phelps'?

LONDON ? We know how this "Female Phelps" label works. It's dangerous, like dropping an anvil on an Olympic backstroker.

We've learned our lesson with that tag. It buried one Olympian already, and those of us who were sensible vowed not to use it again. But along came Missy Franklin, with that 6-foot-1 length and strides that devour water by the metric ton.

"No," we said, shaking a finger. "Not again."

Then she showed us that prodigious youth and versatility ? only 17 years old, and the first woman who will swim seven events in an Olympics.

"We can't," we said, our heads in our hands. "Not again."

Finally, she gave us a gold medal in only her third day as an Olympian, and did it without playing the dutiful female understudy to Sir Michael. And that gold came on the back end of a double swim ? two events only 14 minutes apart. Which even impressed Phelps. Even he never did that.

[ Photos: Swimming phenom Missy Franklin ]

So here we are. Backed into the shallow end of the pool with nowhere to go. Looking at Missy Franklin and on the verge of going thermonuclear with the expectations. Franklin said her gold medal in the 100-meter backstroke "exceeds my expectation 100 billion times."

Enjoy that ratio while you can, kid.

The truth is, Franklin's Q-rating is about to skyrocket, right along with the size of her adoring and hopeful public. And that can be scary. Ask Katie Hoff. Remember Hoff ? the last Olympian to wear the Female Phelps albatross? If you've forgotten, here's a refresher: first Olympics in 2004 at 15 years old ? five Olympic events and three medals in Beijing at 19 ? and now ? not in London. People can blame it on whatever they want, but this is the cautionary tale of the Female Phelps curse.

We sat in Beijing and thought Hoff had three or maybe even four Olympics left in her. She was setting American and world records. She was versatile, qualifying for Beijing in five individual events. And, hell, she was even swimming laps in some of the same Baltimore pools where Phelps came of age. But something happened in Beijing. Numbers got in the way. Phelps gobbled up eight gold medals. Hoff got none. And we pounded that cruel ratio like we were sledge-hammering a peanut.

[ Related: Swimming's old guard displaced by pool's young guns ]

Four years later, Hoff struggled so mightily at the U.S. Olympic Trials that she missed these Games entirely ? despite just having turned 23 years old. This should be her prime, and Hoff should be in London. But she's not, and you have to believe the crucible of the Female Phelps has something to do with it. So to use it again would be ? well ? barbaric.

But after Monday's gold medal ? Franklin's second after winning bronze in the 4x100 freestylerelay ? you can almost hear someone stitching that sash around Franklin. And as unfair as it may be, she's only a few more medals away from leaving us no choice.

Particularly when in all of her 17-year-old bubbly-ness, makes you crack a smile with gold medal declarations like: "I finally got one. Finally, after 17 years."

If she's really that self-expectant, she'll fit right in.

The truth is, Franklin is a lot like Phelps. Physically, her length is going to offer her plenty of advantages as her swimming develops. Mentally, she already looks as comfortable in her own skin ? not to mention confident ? as many of the veterans that surround her. And like many of the greatest Olympic athletes, she's already shown a peek of stubbornness at a young age. When Phelps revealed before these Games that Franklin hadn't sought his advice ? despite him leaving the door open for it ? it said something.

Franklin played it off, saying she had already received ample good advice and bugging Phelps with questions wasn't necessary. But the truth is that most of the greatest athletes at some point eschewed advice from those whose footsteps they were expected to follow. And most of them did it at a young age, choosing to first see if they could find their way on their own terms.

[ Related: Missy Franklin and freestyle relay team win bronze medal ]

Franklin seems like that type. To this point, she has refused to belly-up to the endorsement table, insisting that she wants to swim in college ? which can't happen if endorsement deals are inked. That means she has waved off nearly $100,000 in winnings from meets, and much more from sponsors. As she progressed as a youth, she resisted moving away from Colorado, despite her counterparts flocking to talent-rich swim clubs in Florida, California and Texas. Even her practice schedule is reputed to be a bit more conservative than what you would expect: 5,000-6,000 yards a day keeps the Olympic burnout away.

And maybe that's the twist. Maybe surviving the Female Phelps tag requires the ability to carry and reject the label at the same time. Accept the tag in talent, but reject it when individuality necessitates it. Like a careful dance ? embrace it at an arm's length.

We saw that dance Monday night. While Franklin may not have bombarded Phelps with questions going into these Games, she took his advice when she was approached with her biggest obstacle. Somehow, Franklin had to swim just hard enough to qualify for the 200 freestyle final, but save enough energy to swim in the medal round of the 100 backstroke. And do the double with only an absurd 14 minutes between races. So Franklin and her coach reached out to Phelps, the guy who expertly weaved a tapestry of double swims en route to his eight golds in Beijing.

Phelps gave her his best advice before the 200-meter semifinal: "You're in the second heat, perfect set-up. Just judge what you have to do to make finals."

And Franklin nailed it, finishing .19 seconds ahead of the ninth-place qualifier, giving her the eighth and final spot in the 200 freestyle final. All while saving every last ounce of energy she could to win the 100-meter backstroke. In the nonsensical 14 minutes in between, she did a truncated warm down swim in the diving pool, in plain view of the capacity crowd at the aquatic center.

It looked familiar. It looked like you-know-who.

Maybe it's ok. Maybe we can just go ahead and say it. Missy Franklin looks like she's got the chops. She looks like she can be the female Michael Phelps. And as far as that label goes, she doesn't seem to care one way or another. And that's probably what makes her the perfect fit we've been looking for.

Earnings weigh as FTSE runs out off of puff

LONDON (Reuters) - London's FTSE 100 fell on Tuesday as disappointment over earnings from the likes of BP and Fresnillo saw the three-day rally lose steam with investors awaiting a policy response from central banks to boost flagging global growth.

The FTSE 100 <.ftse> was 2.82 points lower, or 0.1 percent, at 5,690.81, having gained 3.6 percent over the previous 3 trading days and touched the psychologically key 5,700 level intraday for the first time in 10 days.

Tuesday's main faller was heavyweight oil major BP , down 2.8 percent, as the British oil company took a $5 billion (3.18 billion pounds) charge in its second quarter results - more than a typical three months worth of profits - in what was mainly a write down of the value of assets, tipping BP into a loss for the quarter.

Before the results BP scored 45 out of 100 for earnings quality according to Starmine data, lower than average for the region, which indicated future earnings will be difficult to sustain.

"It is such a thin market that we are seeing knee-jerk reactions to results," said Rupert Armitage, director at Shore Capital. The FTSE 100 had traded a miserly 7 percent of its 90-day average in early trade.

"The best case seems to be not be long of stocks going into the results, we have seen that with BP this morning. Shire have figures tomorrow and there is some nervousness ahead of that, so it seems better to have travelled than arrived," Armitage said.

Fresnillo fell too, down 2.1 percent, as the world's largest primary silver producer said first-half profit dipped 9 percent on the back of weaker average silver prices and rising costs.

Weir's shed 3.9 percent after the engineer reported a 27 percent rise in first-half profit as investors banked recent gains ahead of the release on the engineer.

The UK banking sector <.ftnmx1770> came under pressure, following sharp gains over the last four trading days, as poor results from European peers UBS and BBVA helped cap momentum in the sector.

The earnings season has proved a damp squib for European companies, reflecting the harsh economic environment companies are trading in.

Not including Tuesday's results, nearly half the companies due to report earnings have done so, 47 percent have missed forecasts with second-quarter year-on-year growth expected to have contracted by more than 20 percent once all companies have released their results.

POLICY RESPONSE

With the sustainability of earnings a major concern for investors financial markets are looking for a clear policy response on Thursday after European Central Bank President Mario Draghi said last week that, within its mandate, the central bank was ready to do whatever it takes to preserve the euro.

On a further bullish note, on Tuesday Italian Prime Minister Mario Monti said he and Europe are starting to see the light at the end of the tunnel of problems for the euro.

"The words will be chosen carefully to satisfy the markets that the ECB is willing to act and at the same time signal to the targeted countries, likely Spain and Italy, that ECB support is not a substitute for economic reform," UBS said in a note.

"We are with consensus looking for unchanged policy rate at this meeting, although we do expect a 25 basis point rate cut at the September meeting," it said.

As a barometer of investor confidence the put/call ratio on Euro STOXX 50 <.stoxx50e> dropped to a one-month low on Monday, as investors grow more convinced about the European equities on expectations of stimulus actions from the ECB and the U.S. Federal Reserve.

The U.S. Federal Reserve, which starts its two-day policy meeting on Tuesday, was also in focus with some investors anticipating the Fed will opt for some form of monetary stimulus to boost flagging growth.

Debt crisis: Germany's Angela Merkel and Italian PM Mario Monti vow to protect euro

However, Germany has effectively blocked the plans to a direct bailout of the Spanish banking system. As a result, the EU?s ?100bn (?78bn) bank package will be a loan to the Spanish state.

This has unsettled markets and last week raised fears that Spain itself would been a bailout pushed Spanish borrowing cost to fresh euro-era highs of near 8pc.

Although comments from Mario Draghi, the ECB President, Germany and France to they are do everything to maintain the euro did calm fears on Friday, worries still remain with September regarded as a "crunch time" for the euro.

In September a top German court rules on the new eurozone rescue fund, the anti-bailout Dutch vote in elections, Greece tries to renegotiate its financial lifeline, and decisions need to be made on whether taxpayers suffer huge losses on state loans to Athens.

Earlier on Sunday, Wolfgang Sch?uble, the German finance chief, said no further concessions can be made to Greece as he prepared to meet US Treasury Secretary on the German island of Sylt. The two will discuss the "US, European and global economies".

Mr Sch?uble told Germany's Welt am Sonntag newspaper on Sunday that the current bailout plan for Greece was already "very accommodating", adding: "I cannot see that there is any room left for further concessions. The problem did not arise because the programme had faults, but rather because Greece did not implement it fully enough."

He said it was not helpful now to speculate about giving Greece more time or more money.

"It is not a question of generosity. The question is rather, is there plausible way for Greece to manage this."

He also ruled out a further debt writedown for Greece, saying it would "only destroy trust".

Kyocera DuraXT (Sprint)

The Kyocera DuraXT ($69.99) is Sprint's replacement for the Kyocera DuraMax (3 stars). It has a bigger, better speaker, but is otherwise pretty much the same rugged flip-style?cell phone. It's super tough, uses Sprint's relatively new Direct Connect service, and has a loud speaker and great battery life. A dated UI and few features mean it's only average otherwise, but if you need a push-to-talk feature phone, the DuraXT ?is your best bet.

Design, Call Quality, and Direct Connect
Like Sprint's other push-to-talk phones, the DuraXT is built like a big old brick. It measures 4 by 2.1 by 1.1 inches (HWD) when closed, and is covered in a grippy, scratch-resistant, rubberized casing. It's also a bit heavy, at 5.3 ounces. It feels tough, and that's for good reason. The DuraXT meets military specification 810G, so it's resistant to dust, extreme temperatures, low pressure, rain, salt fog, shock, and vibration, among other rough conditions. It can even be submerged in three feet of standing water for 30 minutes. It survived plenty of drops of drops to the floor of the PCMag Labs with nary a scratch. On one drop the door that covers the charging port came open, but nothing was damaged. We also placed the phone in a bucket of water, where it was still able to receive calls and snap photos.

There's a 1-inch, monochrome 96-by-64-pixel external display that shows battery life, reception, and time. The internal 320-by-240-pixel LCD looks surprisingly sharp. The default font size is a bit small, but you can make it larger. The phone's keypad is great; it features large, raised keys with plenty of space in between, which should make it possible to dial while wearing gloves.

The DuraXT is a dual-band EV-DO Rev. A (850/1900 MHz) device with no Wi-Fi.?Reception is average and voice quality is good overall. Earpiece volume goes very loud, and voices sound clear, if a bit thin. Calls made with the phone also sound natural, with good noise cancellation. Calls sounded good through a?Jawbone Era?Bluetooth headset ($129, 4.5 stars) and the Nuance-powered voice dialing worked well. Battery life was great at 8 hours and 12 minutes of talk time.

Back when we reviewed the DuraMax , our biggest issue was that the speaker volume wasn't as loud as we would've liked it to be. After all, a push-to-talk phone should be built to hear outside in a noisy environment. While the DuraXT's speaker isn't quite deafening, it is certainly louder than the DuraMax. It's loud enough to hear on a busy city street, so it should be loud enough to hear over most reasonable construction noise.

Sprint's Direct Connect service combines the 3G Internet speeds and nationwide coverage of Sprint's CDMA network with the instantaneous push-to-talk of the old Nextel iDEN network. You need to be in a Sprint coverage area in order to use the DuraXT, but you can still make push-to-talk calls to Nextel iDEN subscribers.?The new network supports Call Alert With Text, which sends an audio alert and text message to another subscriber, along with Group Connect, which can connect 20 subscribers together at once. You can also use the Direct Connect button to mass-message up to 200 Direct Connect subscribers in one shot, or to send recorded messages to email addresses or handsets via text message.?

For this review, I tested Direct Connect using two different DuraXTs. It takes about a second to initiate the connection, after which transmissions are essentially instantaneous. Voice quality is solid, and like the speakerphone, volume is suitably loud.

Apps, Multimedia, and Conclusions
Like the rest of Sprint's push-to-talk lineup, the DuraXT is an otherwise bare bones feature phone. The main menu features the same grid with 12 icons that Sprint has used on many flip phones in the past. It's dated, and requires many button presses to perform even the simplest tasks.

There's an Access NetFront 4.1 browser for reading WAP pages; desktop HTML is out. The DuraXT also supports Sprint Navigation for voice-enabled, turn-by-turn directions, as well as Sprint Family Locator. You also get the standard apps like an alarm, calculator, and calendar.

There's no music or video player, so the nonstandard 2.5mm headphone jack on the right side of the phone isn't a big issue. You get 64MB of free internal memory, along with a 2GB microSD card installed in the slot underneath the battery. You probably won't need anything larger than this, though my 32 and 64GB SanDisk cards worked fine as well.

The 3.2-megapixel camera includes an LED flash, but no auto-focus. It snaps photos in about 0.5 second, but then takes a good 2 seconds to save them. Test photos look decent, if a little dark, with acceptable color and detail. Videos, on the other hand, are terrible. They max out at a miniscule 176-by-144-pixels and play back at a stuttering 10 frames per second indoors and 15 frames per second outside.

If you're looking for a push-to-talk feature phone on Sprint, the Kyocera DuraXT is your best bet. The Kyocera DuraCore ?(3 stars) costs $20 less, but it isn't as rugged and lacks a camera. The Kyocera DuraPlus??(3 stars) is a slab-style phone that's just as rugged as the DuraXT, but it's a 6.7-ounce beast that also lacks a camera. If you're interested in something more advanced, the?Motorola Admiral??(4 stars) is a ruggedized push-to-talk Android smartphone with plenty of excellent multimedia features, as well as access to more than 400,000 apps in the Android Market.?

Pennsylvania Workers' Comp Case Update

Several recent court case decisions in Pennsylvania could impact the way workers? compensation adjusters handle claims.

According to Tony Salvino, chair of the Workers? Compensation Group at White and Williams? Philadelphia law office, in an interview with Claims Journal, the first half of 2012 was a busy period for workers? compensation with at least six cases.

Lancaster General Hospital v. Worker?s Compensation Appeal Board

Workers? compensation adjusters often have to calculate a worker?s average weekly wage.

?In Pennsylvania, you look one year back from the date of injury, divide it into four 13 week quarters, then take the highest three quarters, and average it out. This is the average weekly wage,? Salvino said.

In the Lancaster case, the claimant was working at Lancaster General Hospital in 1980, cleaning a patient?s tracheostomy. The patient was infected with the Herpes Simplex virus. The patient sneezed, spraying the plaintiff?s left eye. The claimant received medical treatment at the time, but every couple of years she would get recurrent eye infections, Salvino said.

In May 2007, the claimant lost vision in the left eye and though it related back to the 1980 incident, it was treated as a new injury. By then, the claimant no longer worked for the hospital, said Salvino. She was still in the healthcare industry, but she worked for a group of cardiologists.

?Everyone agrees the claimant was entitled to 275 weeks of indemnity benefits for loss of the eye. But her attorney said the average weekly wage does not go back to 1980, when she only made eight dollars an hour, it went back to the 2007 injury because the injury showed itself in 2007 and that should be the date of the injury,? said Salvino.

The hospital disagreed, indicating it shouldn?t have to pay for 2007 wages since they did not employ the plaintiff at that time.

According to Salvino, the Supreme Court ruled that it was a 2007 injury because it flowed from the original one but was considered a new injury.

?So the Court used it at that rate that she was making in 2007,? Salvino said. ?She ended up getting significantly more money because 20 years had gone by, she had gotten raises, and she had just started.?

Salvino said the odds of this happening are not great, but there is always a chance.

?A person can have a knee injury, then five years or 10 years down the road the person needs a knee replacement. That person can relate it back to that incident and that person might be able to get the average weekly wage bumped up to what he was working at when he required the knee replacement,? said Salvino, providing an example.

This case could have far reaching ramifications, the workers? compensation attorney said.

?It creates dangerous precedent that even though somebody had an injury 20 years ago, the average weekly wage for that person when the injury evidenced itself could be applicable,? he said.

Rhonda Walker v. Workers? Compensation Appeal Board

The Rhonda Walker case is important because adjusters are often faced with the question of specific loss in Pennsylvania, Salvino said.

?For example, when someone has a neck injury, that person may have to get a cervical fusion or surgery, a discectomy in their neck. Under Pennsylvania law that person would be entitled to disfigurement if there was any unsightly, permanent scar above the clavicle. That is how a disfigurement claim is described. If a person worked in the area that dealt with fire and he had a scar on his face because of that, he would be entitled to compensation for that,? the attorney explained.

According to Salvino, because disfigurement is subjective, if you lose a thumb in Pennsylvania it is 100 weeks, but the scar value is at the discretion of the judge, ranging anywhere from zero to 275 weeks.

Walker was injured on August 10th, 2007, when she fell down at work. She had bruises on various parts of her body, but the major injury was to her nose.

?As a result of the injury she had a crooked nose. So she believed that she had a specific loss because she had disfigurement above her clavicle, in her face,? Salvino said.

She filed a workers? compensation disfigurement claim and was awarded 45 weeks, almost a year of benefits by the judge, he said.

The case was taken to appeal by both the claimant and the employer because the claimant wanted more than 45 weeks, the employer less.

?The board reversed it and said that she did have a slight crookedness to the left side, but the board held the crookedness is not noticeably disfiguring and therefore not compensable,? Salvino said.

The claimant appealed the board?s decision and the Commonwealth Court said that not every single scar or disfigurement to the face is compensable.

?The Court stated that it also has to be unsightly and if it is not unsightly, and the Court stated a little bit of a crooked nose is not unsightly, the claimant will receive zero and they actually affirmed the board and said no,? said Salvino. ?I would tell you before this case, I would think that most adjusters on the slight disfigurement claims would probably give them 25 weeks on these cases because the adjusters would want to take it out of the hands of the judge? Now, if the scar or disfigurement is not very really not noticeable, these adjusters could take the position that ?Hey, it is not unsightly and we are not going to give you anything.??

Phoenixville Hospital v. Workers? Compensation Appeal Board

According to Salvino, the still pending Phoenixville case deals with vocational labor market surveys.

?In Pennsylvania, if the employer has no job to offer the claimant, the employer can go out and do a vocational assessment or an earning power assessment. Under the current state of the law, the employer just has to get an evaluation and then hire a vocational expert to go and perform an assessment of these local geographical areas. Then, a petition is filed,? Salvino said.

The Phoenixville case may harken back to the days when the Kachinski standard applied, when jobs actually had to be available to claimant.

?If they are?going back to the Kachinski standard, where the employer actually had to offer the job to the claimant and the claimant would have to apply. Something like that will impact how the adjuster handles the case,? Salvino said, indicating the adjuster will be involved in making referrals and dealing with the vocational consultant.

Six L?s Packing Company v. Workers? Compensation Appeal Board

According to Salvino, under Pennsylvania law, if a particular contractor doesn?t have workers? compensation insurance for its employees, then responsibility climbs up the ladder to the general contractor, also known as the statutory employer.

?In a construction case, it makes sense because the idea is the general contractor should ask for a certificate of insurance. Business should only be conducted with reputable contractors. If not, there is a risk of having to pay workers? compensation insurance and that?s in the statute,? Salvino said.

The attorney described a case involving a farm conglomerate, a company that has farms across the country that hired trucking companies to distribute its produce.

According to Salvino, one of the trucking companies had an injured truck driver who filed a lawsuit against his employer, a truck owner and an independent contractor of the farm conglomerate. The truck owner didn?t have workers? compensation coverage. The truck driver tried to go up the chain to the farm, under the statutory employer theory, and the Supreme Court ruled in his favor.

?There are some adjusters who believed, before this case, that it only applied to the construction business where the general contractor hires the subcontractor,? the workers? comp attorney said.

The high court ruled that the legislature meant to require persons or entities contracting with others to perform work, and it has to be a regular or recurrent part of their businesses, to ensure that the employees of those subcontractors are covered by workers? compensation insurance.

?In other words, if you?re a business and you regularly contract with another entity to provide services?for example, the trucking company, and you do not make sure that they have a certificate of insurance, you are on the hook for those employees if that company does not have insurance,? Salvino said.

Giant Eagle Incorporated v. Workers? Compensation Appeal Board

There are instances where the wage portion of the claim is resolved and the insurer is still responsible for the medical benefits, Salvino said.

In the Giant Eagle, the Supreme Court found that a judge has in his discretion the ability to award a discontinuance of medical benefits.

?Under Pennsylvania law, you can send workers to an Independent Medical Examination every six months and if the worker refuses to attend, you can file what?s called a Section 314 petition and get a court order. The court will order it 99.9 percent of the time. The Court will order it because they are saying, ?Well, you are getting compensation. The insurance carrier and the employer are entitled to six month intervals of getting updated medicals,?? Salvino said.

If the court orders it and the claimant refuses to attend, the adjuster can then file for suspension of the weekly or biweekly checks, he said.

With the decision in Giant Eagle, adjusters can now seek a hearing before a judge in order to cut off medical benefits.

?Medical benefits can be suspended but it is at the discretion of the judge and based on the facts of the case,? Salvino said.

Andrew Cozzone v. Workers? Compensation Appeal Board

In the Cozzone case, the Commonwealth Court held that a three year extension for filing a modification and/or reinstatement petition under Section 413(a) of the Workers? Compensation Act is inapplicable to reinstatements following suspensions. The three year extension is applicable only to reinstatements following a termination of benefits. Section 413(a) of the Act imposes a statute of repose whereby a reinstatement petition must be filed within 500 weeks from a suspension of a claimant?s benefits in order to be considered timely filed, Salvino explained.

Richard Palaschak v. Workers? Compensation Appeal Board

In the Palaschak case, the Worker?s Compensation Appeal Board affirmed the judge?s decision to deny the claimant?s request for reinstatement because it was filed more than 500 weeks after his disability benefits were suspended on February, 5, 1996.

According to Salvino, the claimant argued that he became totally disabled in March of 2006 and that there is no time bar on the right to seek total disability benefits. The claimant argued that because his employer provided a modified-duty job, he should be given three years from the date that benefit terminated to seek a reinstatement of total disability benefits.

The employer argued that the state law is clear in that a claimant whose benefits have been suspended may seek reinstatement so long as the reinstatement is filed within 500 weeks of the last payment of disability. In the alternative, the employer asserted that even if the claimant?s petition was not time-barred, he failed to meet his burden of proof for a reinstatement of benefits, according to Salvino.

The court held that the case is governed by the last sentence of the second paragraph of Section 413(a), which gave the claimant, whose benefits were in suspension status, the right to seek reinstatement, so long as he did so within 500 weeks of the suspension date, Salvino explained.

According to the workers? comp attorney, the court unambiguously held that Section 413?s three year limitation is totally inapplicable where there has been a suspension. In addition, the court held that there is no language in the act to support the claimant?s theory that payment of real wages for doing a light-duty job is a type of ?compensation.? To allow this, the statute of limitations would never expire as long as there was a light-duty job available to a claimant, Salvino said.

The claimant?s alternative argument was rejected since the Supreme Court held that if a claimant is working after 500 weeks and up to the time he seeks reinstatement, he must prove that he has an increased, work-related impairment that precludes the continuation of the light-duty employment.

Electronic Photography: The Uncooked vs JPG Debate ...

Electronic engineering has added a good deal as well common photography selections. For the most portion images has all absent digital, from the digital camera to the processing. This is in all likelihood the major evolution in the earth of photograph taking seeing that the creation of the know-how. Not only are you equipped to get far more photographs because of to unrestricted storage you can now manipulate them a great deal more easily.

An individual with an adequate electronic digicam, desktop computer and the best software system can generate studio like prints in no time flat. All you will need to do is have the correct tools and understand how to use it to turned out to be a pro photographer. Electronic processing and personal pc technology have opened the area up for just about any person to enter.

Summary

Regular and electronic photography absolutely enhance a particular one additional. No matter if you are a competent or novice every of these, have their respective sites in your lifespan. Conventional images abilities are positively transferrable to the digital images application. The bottom line is that equally these varieties of images have a place in the earth. In the ideal state of affairs, photographers will realize this fact and use both technologies to deliver fabulous work. The world is altering changing into even more contemporary and technologies pushed electronic photography is only yet another case in point of this point.

How would you like the probability to see colourful animals and strange creatures in their purely natural habitat? Underwater images has you the chance to see coral reefs and other unique animals. You?ll get the prospect to take a look at sections of the earth that are mainly undiscovered. The earth is about sixty eight% water and most of that has in no way been filmed or even looked at previously.

I?ve always been fascinated with discovering the oceans. I?ve been ready to moyen two of my preferred enjoyments in everyday life in underwater images. I?m ready to seize stunning produces underwater with my digicam. I was hooked once I took my to begin with diving lesson. First matter you are going to have to be great at is evidently diving. If you are not a fine diver then it?s planning to be tricky in being an underwater photographer. Adding a digital camera as a distraction to a beginner diver is just inquiring for catastrophe.

There are a very few items you need to give some thought to before striving to get into underwater photography. If you have an understanding of that underwater photography has really completely unique difficulties. You will be capable to locate your way via the studying curve much quicker than most. Underwater images machines has appear along way simply because I primary became interested in it. The difference somewhere between underwater photography and other types of images is that it relies just as significantly on technique as it does your tools. A wedding photographer can have great approach, but if the devices is substandard then it will impact how the pictures transform out.

Underwater images has two kinds of images. These are huge-angle and close up photographs. This is unlike most other sorts of images. The sole motive you only have these two choices is the drinking water alone. With other types of photography the sunshine or you angle are your biggest matters you have to offer with. The variation is you have a large number of a great deal more types of pictures you can acquire. Even while most would take a look at crystal sharp h2o and determine you wouldn?t have any issue with clarity. If you had fog or smoke though seeking to choose an image on land you would have clarity problems. This holds correct when you are underwater and clarity gets a single of your issues to getting an ultimate shot.

Lighting is also thoroughly totally different with underwater images. Depth plays an crucial portion in what colors you see and what you are ready to seize. One time you get to a depth of about 60 feet your only likely to see green and blue. It is like shooting in bowl of pancake syrup. To compensate for the shade distortion you are going to want to get as near as you can to the animal. Your huge-angle lens is heading to allow for you to get a significantly better concentrate on enormous fish and corral and surrounding objects. For a Macro shot you?ll have to get as close as you can to get the perfect shot. Too far out and your shot will be out of concentrate and have no color at all. There aren?t any variety lenses that can be use in underneath h2o images as they would be utterly worthless in this natural environment.

If you are searching for anything less expensive and never want an excellent quality underwater photo. You ought to decide on up a disposable digicam for a handful of pounds at your lieu sporting goods retail outlet. Sad to say, this won?t deliver the results for a specialized photographer. So, your machines is going to be your greatest cost. At any time you add saltwater and gear collectively and you know your likely to shell out a good deal. A portrait photographer only has to be bothered about a small rain and maybe some sand and dust.

Fake Meat So Good It Will Freak You Out

?My first reaction was, if I was given this in a restaurant, I?d get the waiter to come over and ask if he?d accidentally given us real chicken,? says Biz Stone, one of the founders of Twitter, who has been vegan for more than a decade. ?It has a plumpness to it, what they call a ?mouthfeel,? like a kind of fattiness. When you eat other leading meat analogues, they?re delicious, but you kind of know they?re not real. They?re missing something that?s hard to identify. This has a very realistic, meaty, delicious quality.?

Syria rebels brace for 'mother of all battles'

Syrian rebel forces were bracing Friday for the "mother of all" battles in Aleppo, as Washington warned the army could be preparing to carry out a massacre in the country's second city.

Waves of troop reinforcements have been pouring into the northern city -- Syria's commercial capital -- and a security source told AFP the offensive feared by the rebels could come as early as Friday.

"The special forces were deployed on Wednesday and Thursday on the edges of the city, and more troops have arrived to take part in a generalised counter-offensive on Friday or Saturday," the security source said.

Early Friday, helicopter gunships strafed a string of rebel neighbourhoods in the southwest of the city. Clashes also broke out in the Jamiliya district, adjacent to Aleppo's historic old quarter, a human rights watchdog said.

Three people were killed in shelling of the southern Fardoss district and one was shot dead in the Maysaloon neighbourhood, the Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported.

In Salaheddin, a rebel bastion in the southwest of the city, hundreds of opposition fighters were bracing for the threatened counter-offensive by the embattled regime of President Bashar al-Assad.

An AFP photographer saw improvised barriers made up of sandbags and even a bus thrown up across the the streets, as well as makeshift clinics set up inside schools and mosques.

Four of the five roads between the city centre and the airport were under rebel control.

"The army's reinforcements have arrived in Aleppo," Colonel Abdel Jabbar al-Okaidi, a spokesman for the rebel Free Syrian Army (FSA), told AFP via Skype, adding that they were backed by some 100 tanks.

"We expect a major offensive at any time, specifically on areas across the southern belt, from east to west."

The front page of Thursday's edition of pro-government daily Al-Watan carried the banner headline: "Aleppo, the mother of all battles."

"Aleppo will be the last battle waged by the Syrian army to crush the terrorists and, after that, Syria will emerge from the crisis," it said.

Washington warned of the risks of a massacre by government troops in Aleppo, where rebel forces launched a major offensive on July 20 from their rear-bases across the nearby border with Turkey.

"This is the concern, that we will see a massacre in Aleppo, and that's what the regime appears to be lining up for," said State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland.

"Our hearts are with the people of Aleppo. And again, this is another desperate attempt by a regime that is going down to try to maintain control, and we are greatly concerned about what they are capable of in Aleppo."

But she stuck to the US position of providing only non-lethal assistance to the rebels who have been battling for 16 months to topple Assad.

"We do not believe that pouring more fuel on this fire is going to save lives. We are working in non-lethal ways. We are working to support the Syrian opposition," the spokeswoman told journalists.

As the fighting raged in Aleppo, a lawmaker from the city, Ikhlas Badawi, defected and flew to Turkey, the exiled opposition said.

"There were contacts for some time to ensure her a safe place," opposition Syrian National Council member Samir Nashhar told AFP.

"She arrived yesterday (Thursday) in Turkey and she will be going to Qatar, which has agreed to receive her."

She is the fourth member of parliament to have defected since the uprising broke out in March last year.

Nationwide, a total of 164 people were killed in violence on Thursday -- 84 civilians, 43 soldiers and seven rebel fighters, according to the Observatory's figures.

UN peacekeeping chief Herve Ladsous, who was in Damascus for talks with Syrian officials after the Security Council set a 30-day deadline for progress on a troubled peace plan, warned there was "no plan B."

"There is one political process for the time being, that is the six-point plan of the joint special envoy Kofi Annan," Ladsous told reporters in Damascus, referring to peace blueprint that was supposed to have begun with a ceasefire in April that never took hold.

"And as you know, and has been said time and again, there is no plan B. There is no alternative to that," Ladsous added.

"Syrians killing Syrians is something that should not continue."

On Wednesday, Ladsous confirmed that the United Nations had pulled out half of the 300 military observers it deployed to oversee Annan's peace plan after the Security Council on July 20 gave the mission a "final" 30-day extension of its mandate.

The mission had already suspended its patrols in mid-June in the face of the intensifying violence.

SEEMO, Balkan Leaders 'Must Live With Free Media' :: Balkan Insight

The Vienna-based South East Europe Media Organisation, SEEMO, an affiliate of the International Press Institute, IPI, observes with growing concern the way top politicians in South East Europe speak to and about the media.

?Press freedom is the basis of democracy,? underlines Oliver Vujovic, SEEMO Secretary General. ?Public figures have to live with criticism in the media.?

Numerous recent examples illustrate this trend, the organisation said.

On 17 July 2012, Romanian interim president Crin Antonescu labeled the US daily The Washington Post and the French newspaper Le Monde as ?contaminated publications,? blaming the papers for Romania?s deteriorating international image.

One week earlier, Senator Dan Sova accused the Brussels correspondent of Romanian public radio of ?transmitting false information that compromise the current Romanian government?, led by Victor Ponta.

In Bulgaria, on July 5, Prime Minister Boyko Borisov lost patience with the media that had criticized the work of the Ministry of Interior and said: ?Whoever criticizes the Ministry of the Interior serves the mafia.?

The President of the Democratic Party of Socialists of Montenegro, Milo Djukanovic, who has dominated Montenegro?s political scene for two decades, either as a prime minister or president, told the Belgrade magazine Vreme that two Montenegrin dailies, Vijesti and Dan, and the Monitor weekly were aiming to ?destroy and smear Montenegro? and him personally.

Molorad Dodik, president of the Serb-governed territory in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Republika Srpska, declared on 4 June 2012, that press freedom was guaranteed.

But two days earlier, SEEMO reported, on 2 June, Dodik asked Ljiljana Kovacevic, the local correspondent of the Belgrade-based Beta News Agency, to leave a press conference and to not return, calling her a liar.

On 13 May, Tomislav Nikolic, then presidential candidate and currently Serbia?s president, said during the TV show Rec po Rec (Word by Word), on Serbia?s public broadcaster, Radio Television Serbia, that as president, he would call RTS and say: ?I am coming to the television tonight, you will inform about everything I do, I am the president of Serbia?, according to the Association of Serbian Journalists, UNS.

In an interview with the state news agency, MIA, published on 18 October 2011, Macedonian Prime Minister Nikola Gruevski, criticized the journalist Borjan Jovanovski for posing a particular question during a press conference in Brussels, accusing the journalist of asking a ?prearranged question,? intending ?to prepare the terrain? for next year?s ?withdrawal of the recommendation [by the EU to start accession talks], if the name dispute [with Greece] is not solved by then.

?

?I call on politicians in South East Europe to stop publicly naming and shaming journalists,? Oliver Vujovic, SEEMO Secretary General, said.

?Politicians have to understand that press freedom is the basis of democracy. If media do not comply with ethical standards, there are channels to place complaints.

?Accusing journalists of being traitors or mafia agents, without any proof, does not contribute to the respect of the rule of law. It can only lead to self censorship,? he concluded.
