Pushed by her husband, Randy, and sporting the medal awarded to survivors, Gayle Towery of Caldwell finishes the 5K portion of Boise?s Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure. She?s in the midst of chemotherapy. ?My hair?s falling out, I don?t have a lot of strength,? she says. ?(But) this is wonderful. High energy ? that this many people would come out.?
BOISE ? About 12,200 people walked or ran ? or were pushed in wheelchairs ? to participate in Boise?s 15th annual Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure on Saturday along ParkCenter Boulevard.
The number was about 2,500 more than last year, according to Executive Director Hilarie Engle.
?We?re so excited. People are excited," she said.
The 5K and one-mile fun/walk raised $109,000 so far (and donations are accepted through May 31 at komenidaho.org) for awareness, education, early detection of breast cancer, as well as research.
The family of Ilene Tonkin, who died in 1994, was among the participants. Ilene?s daughters now bring their own children in memory of their grandmother.
?Especially (to see)?the survivors, to see how far they?ve come,? says Katie Thompson, one of Ilene?s daughters, still getting emotional. ?The treatment has improved since 1994 ? and the support. It seems my mom didn?t have this kind of support. It?s awesome.?
